Mumford & Sons Return To #1 On Billboard 200
Posted by Joseph Lee on 02.20.2013

Thanks to their win for album of the year at the Grammy Awards, Mumford & Sons are back at #1 on the Billboard 200 as Babel sold another 185,000 copies, a gain of 242%. The album was at #4 last week.

The amount is larger than predicted (150,000 to 170,000). In addition to the Grammy win, sales were helped by a sale for Valentine's Day on iTunes. The album was marked down to $6.99 there (along with albums from Taylor Swift, Maroon 5 and Bruno Mars) and was featured in an email to customers. The album also had a 260% gain in download sales, going from 28,000 to 101,000. This is the largest digital week for a non-debuting album since the week after Christmas, when Taylor Swift's Red sold 131,000 downloads.

Physical sales led to 55% of Babel's sales. This is in part due to two new deluxe editions of the album that were released on February 5. The first at Target includes three bonus live tracks. The second, called the "Gentlemen of the Road" edition, has 12 extra live songs. At the Grammy Awards, the band performed "I Will Wait", then participated in an all-star memorial tribute. This is Babel's fourth non-consecutive week at #1 after spending three weeks there in October.

Along with #1, there are six other spots (2, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 10) that were affected by the Grammys.

The 2013 Grammy Nominees compilation climbs 11-2 with 88,000, which is up 136%. This is the highest-charting week ever for the series since it launched in 1995. It's also the best sales week since Grammy Nominees 2007 sold 131,000 copies the week after the 2007 show. The franchise has had 12 top ten sets overall.

Bruno Mars' Unorthodox Jukebox climbs up 8-3 with 86,000, up 112%. He sang the Hot 100 #1 "Locked Out Of Heaven" at the event before taking part in a Bob Marley tribute with Sting, Rihanna, Ziggy Marley and Damian Marley. Because of that, Bob Marley & the Wailers' greatest hits album Legend is up 99-34 with 20,000 (270% increase).

Taylor Swift opened the Grammys with "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" and as a result climbs 12-4 with 72,000 for Red (up 106%). She was also helped by Target, who ran a TV commercial during the Grammys for an exclusive version of the album. It was also featured in their weekly circular ad. 86% of Red's sales this week were physical.

Album sales this week totaled 6.81 million, up 17% compared to last week (5.81 million) and down 12% compared to last year (7.72 million). Year to date album sales stand at 39.12 million, down 6% compared to the same total at this point last year (41.70 million).
