Soft Machine Co-Founder Kevin Ayers Passes Away

The co-founder of psych-rock pioneers Soft Machine has passed way. An official at Lo-Max records has confirmed that Kevin Ayers passed away in his sleep on Monday at his home in Montolieu, France. Ayers was 68.
Ayers formed Soft Machine in 1966 with drummer-vocalist Robert Wyatt, guitarist Daevid Allen and keyboardist Mike Ratledge and laid the work for the genre that would become progressive rock. The group recorded just one album in 1698 while on tour with Jimi Hendrix in the US. Ayers left the group shortly after the tour and released sixteen solo albums in a sucessful career that ran through 1992. He is survived by two daughters, Rachel and Galen Ayers.
