UPDATE: Stone Temple Pilots Fire Scott Weiland
Posted by Joseph Lee on 02.27.2013

UPDATE: Stone Temple Pilots front man Scott Weiland has commented on being terminated from the band, stating the following…

"I learned of my supposed 'termination' from Stone Temple Pilots this morning by reading about it in the press. Not sure how I can be 'terminated' from a band that I founded, fronted, and co-wrote many of its biggest hits, but that's something for the lawyers to figure out."

ORIGINAL: Billboard reports that the Stone Temple Pilots have fired Scott Weiland, the band he has been the singer of since 1986.

There has been no other information given on the firing and the band has not responded. Their Wikipedia page already shows Weiland as a former member. Guitarist Dean DeLeo, bassist Robert DeLeo and drummer Eric Kretz are still on board.

Weiland will begin a tour with his other band The Wildabouts on Friday in Flint, Michigan. He has not commented on being fired.

STP finished a tour in September that had 23 dates including shows at the Vic in Chicago and Revel Ovation Hall in Atlantic City. The band hasn't updated its website since January 3 when it posted: "New information coming soon."

They formed in 1986 as Mighty Joe Young and then changed their name to Stone Temple Pilots. They released the album Core in September 1992 during the Grunge movement. The album had the hit songs "Plush," "Wicked Garden" and "Sex Type Thing". It peaked at #3 on the Billboard 200. It makes up for five million of the band's 13.3 million albums sold in the US. Six of their albums hit the top ten of the Billboard 200, including 1994's Purple (three weeks at #1), 1996's Tiny Music...Songs From The Vatican Gift Shop, 1999's No.4 and 2001's Shangri-La Dee Da.

The band broke up in 2002 with several members going to supergroups including Velvet Revolver (Weiland) and Army of Anyone (the DeLeo brothers). They got back together in 2008, toured and released a self-titled album in 2010.

They've also had 21 songs on the Alternative Songs chart between 1993 and 2010, but didn't get #1 until 2010's "Between the Lines".
