Bruno Mars Gets Fifth Hot 100 #1 With "When I Was Your Man"
Posted by Joseph Lee on 04.10.2013

Billboard reports that Bruno Mars' song "When I Was Your Man" has climbed 2-1 on the Hot 100, getting his fifth #1. It's also the second #1 in the chart's history to feature piano and vocals exclusively.

Mars is behind only Michael Jackson (13); Stevie Wonder (10); Elton John, Paul McCartney, Usher (nine each); George Michael (eight); Phil Collins, Elvis Presley (seven each; Presley's career predates the Hot 100's start on Aug. 4, 1958) for the most #1s by male solo artists. He is tied with Diddy, Ludacris, Prince and Lionel Richie.

He also has had his first five number ones happen faster than any male since Elvis. His run began on Februray 13, 2010. This means it's only been three years, two months and one week. Elvis is the only one with less time, over two years, seven months and three weeks from August 4, 1958 to March 25, 1961.

The only other song with just piano and vocals to get #1 is Adele's "Someone Like You", which was on top for five weeks in late 2011. It featured Adele on vocals and Dan Wilson on piano. Mars does both in his song. It is also the first ballad since Adele to lead the chart.

Last week's #1, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Thrift Shop", falls to #2 after six nonconsecutive weeks at #1. It is followed by Pink's "Just Give Me A Reason", Rihanna's "Stay" and Justin Timberlake's "Suit & Tie".

In the second half of the top ten, Baauer's "Harlem Shake" comes in at #6 (dropping two spots), followed by another Macklemore & Ryan Lewis song, "Can't Hold Us" all the way up from #15 to #7. Next is Florida Georgia Line's "Cruise", Drake's "Started From the Bottom" and Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive".

Here's the top ten:

1. Bruno Mars - "When I Was Your Man"
2. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (ft. Wanz) - "Thrift Shop"
3. P!nk (ft. Nate Ruess) - "Just Give Me a Reason"
4. Rihanna (ft. Mikky Ekko) - "Stay"
5. Justin Timberlake (ft. Jay-Z) - "Suit & Tie"
6. Baauer - "Harlem Shake"
7. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (ft. Ray Dalton) - "Can't Hold Us"
8. Florida Georgia Line - "Cruise"
9. Drake - "Started From the Bottom"
10. Imagine Dragons - "Radioactive"
