Lady Gaga Says "Applause" Almost Didn't Make ARTPOP Posted by Joseph Lee on 08.16.2013
It was the last of 40 songs played for Interscope...
NME reports that Lady Gaga has said that her new single "Applause" almost didn't make her new album ARTPOP. She revealed the news during an appearance on On Air With Ryan Seacrest. She was forced to release the song ahead of schedule after it leaked online, in what she called a "pop music emergency".
She said that the song "almost didn't make the album" until she met with Jimmy Iovine of Interscope Records and played forty songs during a meeting.
She said: "We played 'Applause' last and Jimmy said to me, 'Well every single record you've played me has been better than the one you played before it, so the last one should be the first single'. It's an incredible process choosing the first single. You just play the music and see who gets drunk and takes their shirt off first."
Producer DJ White Shadow, who worked with Gaga on the album, said she wrote a large amount of material for the album. He said: "It's a result of her dedication. We wrote 70-100 songs over the course of two and half years. This time we tried to have as much fun as we possibly could and then brought them to our friends and said, 'What do you think?'"
