Katy Perry Debuts At #1 On Billboard Digital Songs Chart
Posted by Joseph Lee on 08.21.2013

Katy Perry has debuted at #1 on the Billboard Digital Songs Chart as "Roar" sold 557,000 downloads. This is larger than predicted, as experts were suggesting an amount between 525,000 and 550,000 downloads as recently as Sunday. This was increased from a projection of 400,000 on August 12, when the song was released.

This is also the sixth-largest sales week for a digital song ever and the best sales week for both Perry and Capitol Records. "Roar" only falls behind Flo Rida's "Right Round" (a debut with 636,000; 2009), Ke$ha's "Tik Tok" (610,000; 2009), Bruno Mars' "Grenade" (559,000; 2010) and Taylor Swift's "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" (a debut with 623,000; 2012) and "I Knew You Were Trouble" (582,000; 2012). "Roar" also has the third-largest debut behind "Right Round" and "We Are Never". The song is the lead single from Perry's album Prism, which will be released on October 22.

There are three debuts in the top ten this week, along with Perry's "Roar". This is the first time that's happened since October 20, 2012, when One Direction ("Live While We're Young"), Swift ("Red") and Adele ("Skyfall") did it. The other two debuts were Luke Bryan (#5; "That's My Kind of Night") and Lady Gaga.

Gaga takes #3 with "Applause", which sold 218,000 downloads. This is her thirteenth top ten hit and her best sales week since "The Edge of Glory" debuted with 266,000 for #2 on May 28, 2011. It is the first single from her new album ARTPOP, which will be out on November 11.

1. Katy Perry - "Roar" (557,000)
2. Robin Thicke (ft. T.I. and Pharrell) - "Blurred Lines" (291,000)
3. Lady Gaga - "Applause" (218,000)
4. Jay Z (ft. Justin Timberlake) - "Holy Grail" (178,000)
5. Luke Bryan - "That's My Kind of Night" (164,000)
6. Miley Cyrus - "We Can't Stop" (148,000)
7. Avicii - "Wake Me Up!" (138,000)
8. Imagine Dragons - "Radioactive" (121,000)
9. Lana Del Rey (ft. Cedric Gervais) - "Summertime Sadness" (117,000)
10. Lorde - "Royals" (107,000)

Digital track sales this past week totaled 23.1 million downloads, up 4% compared to last week (22.1 million) and down 7% compared to last year (24.8 million). Year-to-date track sales are at 843.3 million, down 3% compared with the same total at this point last year (870.2 million).
