They signed for only $600…
Sub Pop has released an image of Nirvana's original record contract with the label on Tumblr. You can check out the image of the document below.
The 25 year old document confirms that Nirvana signed with the label for an initial advance of just $600. Sub Pop describes the deal as "six hundred bucks well spent - not that we had it at the time." The agreement was made between Sub Pop and the band's line-up at the time: Kurt Cobain, Jason Everman, Chad Channing and Krist Novoselic, whose name is written incorrectly as "Chris".
The contract stipulates that the agreement would begin on January 1, 1989, before Dave Grohl joined the band in 1990. It also stipulates while the band would only receive an advance of $600. However, the contract also confirms the band would receive larger advances of $12,000 for the first option year and $24,000 for the second option year.
