A unique collaboration...
In an interview with Billboard, Sting spoke about his new album The Last Ship and revealed that AC/DC's Brian Johnson will provide guest vocals. The album is set in a shipbuilding community. Sting brought in names that have ties to his hometown of Newcastle, England. He brought Jimmy Nail out of retirement, who guests along with Kathryn Tickell and the Wilson Brothers. He said that Johnson (who he knew from the band Yellow), "came on board and sang a couple of songs." The album will be released on September 24.
He said: "I like to take one element from this and add it to that and you see what happens, which for me is where the creative spark is. The results are unpredictable but I think it's worth having the experiment. That's what my job is, mix things up a bit."
Other collaborators include Julian Sutton, The Unthanks (whose can be heard clogging on the album) and Tickell's brother Peter.
This is Sting's first full-length album of new music since 2003's Sacred Love and features songs he wrote for a musical of the same name. The story is set around the failing shipbuilding business in Wallsend, England, where Gordon Sumner grew up.
He added: "It's my job to utilize all the music I've been exposed to and loved and learned from. And so a lot of songs are rooted in that modal, Northeastern, folk-based pallet."
Sting will perform songs from the album at ten benefit concerts at The Public Theater in New York City from September 25 to October 9.
