Fans celebrate the anniversary of Jackson’s birthday…
Billboard reports that the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson, took a significant leap on the Billboard Social 50 chart this week with the celebration of his birthday on social media channels.
Jackson jumped 14 positions (27-13), after online activity surrounding the anniversary of his birthday started on Thursday, August 29 and the launch of his Instagram account. An interactive social media campaign promoted Jackson across various social media channels. It instructed fans to "spread the message of unity, harmony, and hope for a better world." Also, fans could upload an Instagram video to "honor Michael Jackson on his birthday by sharing your idea for making the world a better place." Participants were able to have their videos disaplayed on a microsite which doubled as a promotional board for the Michael Jackson One Cirque Du Soleil show.
The campaign resulted in a 109% rise in weekly conversation on Jackson on Facebook which led to 493,000 new fans on the platform. Jackson's official Instagram account gained 2,900 followers during the charting week.
A week of post-MTV Video Music Awards reactions to Miley Cyrus sent her up from 8-2 on the chart, just behind One Direction. One Direction remained at No. 1 for an eighth week, supported by the release of their new film, This Is Us. Cyrus co-performer during the VMA's, Robin Thicke, reached his highest mark on the Social 50 to date, moving up from 37-9 to break the top 10. Thicke added 281,000 new fans to his overall fanbase (a 74% increase).
In addition, Justin Bieber dropped out of the top 10 for the first time in 145 weeks, going from 4-12. Bieber's fall resulted from not being present at the VMA's and also being in between album releases.
Rounding out the top 10: Justin Timberlake was No. 3; Shakira went down from 2-4; Taylor Swift remained at No. 5; Katy Perry was No. 6; Selena Gomez went up from 11-7; Pitbull went up from 12-8; and Eminem went up from 18-10.
