New York Daily News reports that when New York Yankees closer Mariano "Sandman" Rivera was given a farewell on Sunday, he was played off by Metallica. The band were at Yankee Stadium to play a live version of Rivera's entrance theme: "Enter Sandman."
The song was part of a 50-minute presentation before the start of the game. The band dragged a large amp from the home dugout with Rivera's #42 and the names "Metallica" and "sandman". All of the band members (James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo) autographed it. They performed in front of over 49,000 people at the stadium.
Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg called September 22 "Mariano Rivera Day." Twitter used the hashtag #ExitSandman to talk about it. Last week, the Red Sox honored his career (19 seasons) with a Boston Cello Quartet performance of "Enter Sandman".
