Which made Britney Spears famous...
In an interview with MTV to promote their VH1 biopic Crazy Sexl Cool: The TLC Story, TLC (Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas) revealed that the song "Baby One More Time", which made Britney Spears famous fifteen years ago, was actually meant for them until they turned it down. The group was coming off of the success of "Baby-Baby-Baby" at the time. Songwriters Max Martin and Rami Yacoub thought the song would fit the trio, but TLC said no.
T-Boz said: "I was like, I like the song but do I think it's a hit? Do I think it's TLC? I'm not saying 'hit me baby.' No disrespect to Britney. It's good for her. But was I going to say 'hit me baby one more time'? Hell no!"
The trio had female empowerment in their songs with tracks like "Hat 2 Da Back" and "Unpretty".
Chilli said while they knew it would be a good song, they didn't think it represented them. She said: "Understand we're not just passing up hits."
T-Boz added: "That's not even my subject of conversation, so you know, it worked for her, I'm happy for her, I like Britney. Every song isn't good for each artist, and when you're a real artist you know what you believe in and what you really want to sing. So, I'm clear that it was a hit, but I'm also clear that it wasn't for TLC."
