Their first in three years...
Billboard reports that the latest trailer for Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, released last week, features the first new U2 song in three years, called "Ordinary Love". The film stars Idris Elba (The Wire) in the title role, looking at Nelson Mandela's early life and imprisonment. It will be released on November 29. "Ordinary Love" is the first song from U2 since 2010's "Soon", from their U2 360 at the Rose Bowl DVD.
U2 and Bono have been longtime supporters of Mandela, who turned 95 in January and has been in poor health. Weinstein Company co-founder Harvey Weinstein asked the band to write the song.
Weinstein said: "It was the fastest 'yes' I have ever received. The band saw various cuts of the film over the summer and worked diligently to write a song that truly reflects Nelson Mandela. I think they did a brilliant job honoring the man and the leader they have known for over 20 years."
Meanwhile, bassist Adam Clayton confirmed the band are almost done with the follow-up to 2009's No Line on the Horizon during a radio interview in Ireland.
He said: "We're trying to get these 12 songs absolutely right and get them finished by the end of November, and then we can kind of enjoy Christmas. It's a bit of a return to U2 of old, but with the maturity, if you like, of the U2 of the last 10 years. It's a combination of those two things and it's a really interesting hybrid."
