What was it?
The New York Times reports that Lou Reed's cause of death has been revealed. The Velvet Underground singer died of liver disease. Dr. Charles Miller, who runs the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, confirmed the cause. Reed had liver transplant surgery this year at that clinic and was being treated again until a few days ago.
Reed's death was announced on Sunday. He was 71. When he had his liver transplant operation in May, his wife Laurie Anderson said he might not "ever totally recover." Reed then posted a message to fans on Facebook where he called himself a "triumph of modern medicine" and said he's looking forward to playing live again. He returned to performing on June 20 but in July was taken to the hospital with "severe dehydration".
Several artists have paid tribute to Reed, including David Bowie, Morrissey, The Strokes, Patti Smith and Sonic Youth.
