Experience Hendrix To Return In 2014 With Zakk Wylde And Others
Posted by Joseph Lee on 11.18.2013

Radio.com reports that Experience Hendrix will return next year. The cover band project has been going off and on since the first version at the Jimi Hendrix Guitar Festival at Bumbershoot 1995. This year's tour features Buddy Guy, Bootsy Collins and Zakk Wylde, along with Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Jonny Lang, Dweezil Zappa, Eric Gales, Eric Johnson, Serbian blues-rocker Ana Popovic, Doyle Bramhall II, Mato Nanji of Indigenous, and Los Lobos co-frontmen Cesar Rosas and David Hidalgo. The tour begins on March 11 in Dallas and runs through April 3 in Detroit.

While Wylde and Popovic haven't performed with the group before, the rest have. Tour organizer John McDermott said that the goal to show the scope of Hendrix's influence.

He said: "We try to follow the roots to the fruits. Before he passed away, we had [blues legend] Hubert Sumlin, who was a favorite of Jimi's. We have Buddy Guy, who is a favorite of Jimi's. We like to have a variety of [younger] players to show how broad and deep the influence is."

Wylde has been a fan of Hendrix for years and even named one of his sons Hendrix. Popvic covered Hendrix' "Belly Button Window on the 2000 tribute album Blue Haze.

McDermott added: "Ana is somebody who we had seen, we saw a performance of ‘If 6 Was 9,' which was great, so she was a no-brainer for us."

Kenny Wayne Shepherd has been doing the tours since they began in 2004. He said he's looking forward to joining the two this time. He said: "I'm always curious to see when they bring somebody new in, what songs they're going to choose and what their interpretation is going to be of Hendrix's music."

The rhythm section includes bassist Billy Cox, who played with Hendrix in the Band of Gypsys and in the Experience, and former Double Trouble drummer Chris Layton.

The lineup is subject to change from one performance date to the next, based on the artists touring schedules. Others are expected to be added, including Ernie Isley of the Isley Brothers. Hendrix used to play in the Isley's backing band and lived in the family house in New Jersey.
