Billy Joel To Have Residency At Madison Square Garden
Posted by Joseph Lee on 12.03.2013

Billboard reports that Billy Joel is set to take up a residency at Madison Square Garden in New York City. He said he will play once a month as long as there is demand for it. Four previously announced shows (January 27, February 3, March 21 and April 28) are already sold out. He will also perform on his 65th birthday on May 9. Tickets for that show go on sale on Saturday.

He said in a statement: "Performing at Madison Square Garden is a thrilling experience. I've played different venues all over the world, but there's no place like coming home to The Garden. Since my first show in 1978, I've always looked forward to the energy of the crowd. I'm honored to be joining the Madison Square Garden family and look forward to taking the stage of the newly transformed Garden to create many more memorable nights."

He has played 46 shows at the arena and has the record for most-consecutive sold-out concerts there with 12.

James L. Dolan, executive chairman of The Madison Square Garden Company, said: "This new partnership will ensure that someone who has been such an important figure in our past, will also be a major part of our future."

He played the venue last year at the 12-12-12 concert for victims of Hurrican Sandy, his return after three years off. In 2013 he performed at Australia's Stone Music Festival, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and a short UK tour, his first since 2006. He also had his first Long Island concert in 11 years in October, which benefitted Long Island Cares, the Hauppauge-based charity founded by Harry Chapin. On December 8, he will be given the Kennedy Center honor. On New Year's Eve he'll play at the Barlcays Center in Brooklyn.
