He calls his critics "weak"...
In an interview with The Guardian (via The Independent, R. Kelly compared Chris Brown to Martin Luther King Jr and Jesus Christ, saying he empathized with Brown's attempts to make himself better. Brown is currently in a court-ordered 90-day inpatient rehab to manage his "anger issues".
Kelly said: "I only feel sorry for weak people. And mostly what I've come to find is that the weak people are the ones that are the haters. The ones that's talking about Chris Brown, or R. Kelly, or anybody that's successful? I feel sorry for them, not Chris Brown, because he's obviously one strong individual to be able to do what he's done. He got knocked down a little bit and he climbed up. You know, that sounds like Ali to me. That sounds like Martin Luther King to me. That sounds like a lot of the greats that have walked this earth. It even sounds a little bit like Jesus to me."
Brown was arrested in 2009 on a felony assault charge for beating up Rihanna. He was sentenced to five years probation and six months of community service. In May 2013, he was involved in a hit-and-run. After turning himself into Van Nuys Police, he was released in thirty minutes and the charges were later dropped. On October 27, he was charged with felony assault after a fight with a man at the W Hotel in Washington, D.C. Prosecutors lowered the charges to felony misdemeanor. Finally, Brown is being sued by Frank Ocean's cousin Sha'Keir Duarte for three million dollars after he claimed that Brown's bodyguards attacked him in a studio parking lot in West Hollywood in January.
R. Kelly, meanwhile, has had controversy himself over the years. In 2008 he was accused but eventually found not guilty of 14 charges of child pornography. A 23-year-old woman, who was allegedly featured in the video shot ten years prior, refused to testify. In 1996, he was sued for ten million by a 24-year-old woman who claimed he had sex with her when she was fifteen. The case was settled out of court with a payment of $250,000. Kelly also married Aaliyah in 1994 when she was fifteen, dedicating the song "Age Aint Nothing But A Number" to her. The marriage was annulled after it was revealed she lied about her age.
Kelly released his new album Black Panties, promoting it with a special hotline that would allow fans to get eight messages from Kelly per month. The content of the messages hasn't been revealed.
