Posted by Joseph Lee on 01.04.2014

NME reports that two music documentaries are on the shortlist for Best Documentary at this year's Academy Awards, including Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer and 20 Feet From Stardom. There were 147 documentaries total that qualified and fifteen were placed on a shortlist. Five nominees will be selected from that list.

Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer was directed by Mike Lerner. It follows Pussy Riot as the protest Vladimir Putin's control of Russia and their imprisonment as a result of it.

20 Feet From Stardom was directed by Morgan Neville and looks at the history of the background singer, focusing on singers like Merry Clayton ("Gimmie Shelter") , Darlene Love, Lisa Fischer, Tata Vega and Judith Hill. It also features interviews with Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen and Sting.

The other thirteen documentaries on the list include The Act of Killing, The Armstrong Lie, Blackfish, The Crash Reel, Cutie and the Boxer, Dirty Wars, First Cousin Once Removed, God Loves Uganda, Life According to Sam, The Square, Stories We Tell and Tim's Vermeer. The official nominations will be revealed on January 16 and the awards will be presented on March 2.
