Rolling Stone reports that the Tupac Shakur Broadway musical Holler if Ya Hear Me will debut On June 19 at the Palace Theater in New York, with preview performances starting on May 26. The production has an eight million dollar budget and includes classic 2Pac songs like "California Love," "Keep Ya Head Up," "Me Against the World" and "Holler If Ya Hear Me".
Unlike the biopic (which begins shooting this year), the story will not be based on his life or his death by drive-by shooting in 1996. The script, written by Todd Kreidler, focuses on two childhood friends living in a poor Midwestern industrial city who are trying to live their dreams. The show's producers say it is a story of "friendship, family, revenge, change and hope."
The show will be directed by Kenny Leon, who was nominated for a Tony Award in 2010 for Fences. The musical will be produced by Shakur's mother Afeni along with Eric L. Gold and Shin Chun-soo. Afeni told Broadway.com last year: "Tupac was a prophet, and I want everyone to see that."
