It was part of a school assignment…
WPTV reports that a teacher in Florida was suspended for using the lyrics of rapper Lil Wayne in a homework assignment.
The English teacher at the Charter School of Boynton Beach reportedly gave his eighth grade students (ages 13-14) uncensored lyrics to the rapper's 2010 track, "6 Foot 7 Foot" and asked them to find examples of figurative language. The was suspended for three days for the incident.
Headmaster of the school, Wayne Owens, said in a statement: "The lesson was for students to learn to identify literary devices. The teacher had already introduced Edgar Allen Poe and Shakespeare. Students were having difficulty grasping the concepts of literary devices such as: pun, simile, metaphor, so the teacher used colloquial material. This material did not meet the school's standards and was not approved. The teacher recognizes that it was totally inappropriate for a school assignment."
