Billboard reports that a social awareness campaign last week that marked the birthday of the late reggae legend Bob Marley sent him surging up the Billboard Social 50 chart. Marley went up from 35-14 on the chart this week, his highest ranking since October 12 when he hit No. 11.
Fans celebrated Marley's birthday on February 6. There was a social awareness campaign with the hashtag #BobMarleyWeek. The campaign encouraged fans to use webcams to upload their Bob Marley tribute videos to a special website where they could interact with other Marley fans. The best videos will be judged by the contest organizers and released as part of a special tribute video. The campaign brought on a 22% lift in conversation on Marley on Facebook. He gained 434,000 new fans on the platform (27% increase from the last week). His Wikipedia page also had a 147% increase in weekly traffic.
Bruno Mars moved up from 10-4 on the chart after his Super Bowl halftime performance on February 2. Mars had a 21% rise in weekly plays to his VEVO and YouTube channels.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers also reentered the chart at No. 50 after their own halftime show guest performance alongside Mars. This marks the first time the group has entered the chart since August 2012. The group gained 130,000 new fans on Facebook.
Rounding out the top 10: Shakira remained at No. 1 for the third straight week; Rihann fell from 4-5; Justin Bieber was No. 2; Miley Cyrus came in at No. 3; Katy Perry went down from 5-6; Eminem jumped up from 13-7; Ariana Grande placed No. 8; One Direction stayed at No. 9; and Beyonce bottomed out the top 10, going from 7-10.
