While taking part in a protest...
The two members of Pussy Riot who were jailed for nearly two years have been arrested in Russia while being part of a protest outside a courtroom in Moscow. Billboard reports that Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina were arrested along with 200 people who were involved in the demonstration protesting the sentencing of eight people arrested during a protest in May of 2012. The original protest was in response to Vladimir Putin's inauguration the next day.
According to the lawyer for Andrei Belousov, who received two and a half years in prison during the sentencing, the punishment was partially due to the Kremlin's reaction to the protests in Ukraine that overthrew that government last week. The U.S. Department of State released a statement on the protest convictions on Friday saying, "We have seen numerous prosecutions of activists, journalists, and opposition politicians since 2012, including the recent case of environmental activist Yevgeniy Vitishko, sentenced to three years in jail for reportedly spray-painting a fence. We reiterate our serious concerns about the ongoing pressure on civil society in Russia."
