Founding member of the punk band was sixty-four...
The drummer for The Stooges has passed away. Stooges frontman Iggy Pop has issued a statement on his Facebook page revealing that Scott Asheton, who was a founding member of the band, passed away Saturday night at the age of sixty-four.
My dear friend Scott Asheton passed away last night. Scott was a great artist, I have never heard anyone play the drums with more meaning than Scott Asheton. He was like my brother. He and Ron have left a huge legacy to the world. The Asheton's have always been and continue to be a second family to me.
My thoughts are with his sister Kathy, his wife Liz and his daughter Leanna, who was the light of his life.
Asheton's brother Ron, who was the band's founding guitarist and co-songwriter with Pop, passed away in 2009. Pop is the remaining founding member of the group, who are one of the most influental protopunk bands of all-time. The group is considered to have been instrumental in the rise of punk rock.
On behalf of 411, our condolences to the family, friends and fans of Mr. Asheton.
