M.I.A. Sued By NFL For $16.6 Million Over Super Bowl Middle Finger
Posted by Jeremy Thomas on 03.17.2014

M.I.A. has been sued for $16.6 million by the NFL over her delivery of the middle finger during her peformance at Super Bowl XLVI. As you may recall, the singer was part of Madonna's performance at the 2012 Super Bowl and spurred controversy when she extended her middle finger. The NFL has been after the singer in arbitration since then, demanding $1.5 million for an alleged breach of her performance contract and "tarnishing its goodwill and reputation."

Now, THR reports that the organization has upped its demands to $16.6 million, with the additional claim coming from restitution in the alleged value of public exposure she received by appearing for an approximately two minute segment during Madonna's performance. They're basing that on what advertisers would have paid for ads during that time.

M.I.A.'s response, filed Friday, argues, "The claim for restitution lacks any basis in law, fact, or logic." She called the claim "transparently an exercise by the NFL intended solely to bully and make an example of Respondents for daring to challenge NFL."
