CNN reports that during an appearance on NBC's Today show on Friday (March 21), Lady Gaga defended her controversial performance at SXSW, where she was vomited on by performance artist Millie Brown. According to Gaga, the performance was "art in its purest form."
During the performance, London artist Millie Brown vomited paint over Gaga as she played "Swine." Brown then mounted a bucking bronco in the shape of a pig alongside Gaga and simulated sex with Gaga until the song ended.
On Today, Gaga said that her and Brown's show displayed the essence of her recent Artpop album and said that neither performer was surprised by the negative reaction to the SXSW show. Gaga stated: "I guess we weren't completely surprised. [Millie Brown] and I know that not everybody's going to love that performance. But we both really believe in artistic expression and strong identities. I support her and what she does. ARTPOP, my new album, is about bringing art and music together and the spirit of creative rebellion. For us, that performance was art in its purest form. But we totally understand that some people won't be into it."
