Her next directorial effort...
According to The Hollywood Reporter reports that Madonna is set to direct an adaptation of Rebecca Walker's debut novel Ade: A Love Story. Madonna previously directed 2011's romance period film W.E. and the 2008 comedy Filth and Wisdom. The Weinstein Company released W.E, which only earned $583,000 at the domestic box office.
Bruce Cohen will produce the film through Bruce Cohen Productions. Jessica Leventhal, the company's director of development, and Walker will also produce.
Walker is the daughter of Alice Walker (author of The Color Purple) and civil rights lawyer Mel Leventhal. She previously wrote about growing up interracial with mixed religions in the book Black, White and Jewish: Autobiography of a Shifting Self. Ade was published in October of last year. Walker's narrator is similar to herself (with a Christian mother and Jewish father). The story is about 19-year-old American student traveling with a feminist in Africa. She falls in love with a young Muslim man on an island off the coast of Kenya. They make plans to marry but the plans are ruined by "cultural and political forces." The story includes sex, religion, race and lesbianism. Madonna previously provided a blurb that appeared in promotional materials.
Madonna and the producers are currently looking for a screenwriter. Cohen was a producer on Silver Linings Playbook and is adapting the graphic novel The Fifth Beatle.
