[VIDEO] Nick Cannon Defends 'Whiteface' Stunt on Good Morning America Posted by Jeremy Thomas on 03.31.2014
He says it's not the same as blackface...
Nick Cannon appeared on Good Morning America today to promote his new album White People Party Music, which releases tomorrow, and defended his use of "whiteface" in a series of Instagram pics earlier this month. As previously reported, Cannon posted a series of pics and videos under the persona of "Conner Smallnut" and defended it on Twitter, saying it was humor and not hatred.
Cannon told GMA's hosts, "They're using this term 'whiteface,' like I don't even know what that is. I know 'blackface' was a term that was created in 1869 to describe offensive minstrel shows. 'Whiteface,' if you look it up and Google it, it's a ski slope in upstate New York. I was doing a character impression. Blackface is about oppression."
He added, "The mission was to have fun, and yes, put it out there that we have issues with race in this country and in this world, but it doesn't have to be with hatred."
