Man Allegedly Extorting Jay Z Claims He Saved His Recordings

TMZ reports that producer Chauncey Mahan, the man Jay Z has accused of extortion says he saved the recordings that Jay Z claims he is holding for ransom. He said if it wasn't for him, the recordings would have been lost or destroyed.

Mahan was held by police this past Friday after Jay Z's people claimed he stole the master recordings for some of Jay Z's songs in 2002, then holding them for a $100,000 "storage fee". Mahan claims that he didn't steal anything. Def Jam told him to keep track of the recordings because Jay Z "was a stupid kid smoking blunts" who was "reckless" with his intellectual property.

Over the last decade, Mahan said he's told Jay Z's people that he had the recordings but they ignored him. He asked for money last week when he couldn't afford to keep the masters in storage anymore. He asked for $100,000 for compensation in keeping the recordings safe for 12 years. Mahan also claims the masters themselves, which are for his Volume 3 and Dynasty albums (including songs like "Big Pimpin" and "I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me)") sound "awful".

Police are now in possession of the tapes before a judge can rule who should get them.
