Frozen Gets Biggest Sales Week Yet And Eleventh Week On Billboard 200
Posted by Joseph Lee on 04.23.2014

Frozen is now the longest-running #1 soundtrack for an animated film, as it spends an eleventh week on top of the Billboard 200, beating The Lion King's ten weeks. Thanks to Easter shopping, it earned its biggest sales week yet with 259,000 copies sold. That's a 94% increase compared to last week, when it sold 133,000. It is the fifth week in a row that the album has sold over 100,000 copies. It has sold 2.3 million total so far.

Since SoundScan took charge of the Billboard 200 on May 25, 1991, Frozen is the ninth album and third soundtrack to spend at least eleven weeks at #1. Since the chart began publishing on a weekly basis in 1956, Frozen is one of fifteen soundtracks to spend at least eleven weeks at #1.

Easter shopping sales usually benefits music that is marketing towards families and children. Several titles on the chart have had increases as a result, including One Direction's Midnight Memories (55-38, 9,000 sold, up 68%) and Kidz Bop 25 (42-20, 15,000 sold, up 126%).

Frozen is the first album since Midnight Memories to get five straight weeks of sales over 100,000. One Direction did it with its first five weeks, ending on December 29. The soundtrack, however, is on a much later hot streak as it was released on November 26, 2013 and sold 44,000 copies in its debut week. It didn't begin its current streak until the week of March 23.

There were several debuts in the top ten this week, with the most notable being Jason Derulo's third album Talk Dirty at #4. It sold 44,000 copies, just a little better than his self-titled debut (42,000) in 2010. That album also debuted and peaked at #11. The title song is currently at #1 on the Pop Songs airplay chart.

1. Frozen soundtrack (259,000)
2. August Alsina - Testimony (approx. 68,000)
3. NEEDTOBREATHE - Rivers in the Wasteland (49,000)
4. Jason DeRulo - Talk Dirty (44,000)
5. Ingrid Michaelson - Lights Out (37,000)
6. Luke Bryan - Crash My Party (33,000)
7. Pharrell Williams - G.I.R.L. (just under 33,000)
8. Lorde - Pure Heroine (26,000)
9. 5 Seconds of Summer - She Looks So Perfect (just under 26,000)
10. Now 49 (22,000)

Album sales this week totaled 5.3 million copies, up 23% from last week (4.3 million) and down 2% compared to last year (5.4 million). Year-to-date album sales stand at 76.2 million, down 16 percent compared with the same total at this point last year (90.5 million).
