They're getting honored...
Billboard reports that Kanye West and producer Rick Rubin will get the Roland 808's award for their work in hip-hop the Tribeca Disruptive Innovation Awards. It will be held on April 25 at the NYU Skirball Center for Performing Arts. The award is for the use of the 808 Drum Machine, a staple in the genre. Rubin co-founded Def Jam Records and has worked with Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Run–D.M.C. and West. West's fourth album was called 808's & Heartbreak.
The two worked with producer Mark Romanek to create a thank you video, which will debut during the awards ceremony. It combines images similar to Pink Floyd's The Wall and other classic movie footage, with a thank you in subtitles.
Rubin said: "Kanye and I would like to give thanks on behalf of the Roland TR-808 drum machine. It continues to be responsible for new music some thirty years after its release and discontinuation."
