Arcade Fire Frontman Responds to Criticism Over Andrew Garfield's Casting in 'We Exist' Music Video
Posted by Jeffrey Harris on 05.25.2014

Speaking to The Advocate, Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler responded to the criticism of the music video for "We Exist," by transgender woman and singer Laura Jane Grace. The music video stars Andrew Garfield as a transgender woman who finds peace while rocking with the band onstage at Coachella.

In the video, Garfield shaves his head, dons a wig and dress, and dances after a scary situation at a bar. The video garnered rave reviews, but Grace criticized the video on her Twitter account. She wrote, "Dear @arcadefire, maybe when making a video for a song called "We Exist" you should get an actual "Trans" actor instead of Spider-Man?"

Butler explained that casting Garfield in the video made it more impactful. He stated, "For a gay kid in Jamaica to see the actor who played Spider-Man in that role is pretty damn powerful, in my opinion," Butler added that he could "see the sensitivity of the issue."
