Thanks to J Dilla...
Kanye West says he doesn't plan on ever selling out, and it's thanks to J Dilla. Kanye delivered the heads up during his appearance on the Stones Throw Records Our Vinyl Weighs a Ton, a half-hour portion of which you can see below.
In the documentary, Kanye references the late Dilla, who was renowned as a producer and passed away in 2006 just after the release of his LP Donuts. Dilla has been cited as a huge influence on hip-hop production and West, as a producer, has said many times that he was deeply influenced and inspired by the Detroit-based rapper.
Kanye said of his own music, "We gotta make music and think, ‘If Dilla was alive, would he like this?' I have to work on behalf of Dilla. When I put a weird-ass Jamaican sample, it works at first but it's not until I put the [makes discordant musical noise] that it sounds like art or sounds slightly wrong. And now it'll go to the radio now that it's wrong, motherf–ker. Now play this. Play this 5-minute song that completely f–ks up your programming. The best respect that we can pay to great artists that have inspired us so much is to never sell out."
