Zendaya Drops Out of Aliyah Biopic

The production is now on hold...
Zendaya will no longer be playing Aliyah in Lifetime's planned biopic. THR reports that the film, titled Aaliyah: Princess of R&B, has been put on hold after the Disney Channel actress dropped out of the lead role. The TV movie would have filmed during the summer and premiered in the fall, based on Christopher Farley's Aaliyah: More Than a Woman.
The film was met with resistance from the late R&B star's family, who were upset that Lifetime didn't consult them about the project and were considering legal options. Cousin Jomo Hankerson had said, "We want a major studio release along the lines of What's Love Got to Do with It, the Tina Turner movie."
No word on whether these issues were what led to the dropping out. A network rep didn't have comment, while Lifetime posted to Twitter:
We are sad Zendaya will no longer portray Aaliyah. Production is currently on hold.
