Guardians of the Galaxy Soundtrack Scores #1 Spot On Billboard 200
Posted by Joseph Lee on 08.13.2014

The soundtrack to Guardians of the Galaxy has climbed to #1 on the Billboard 200, the second soundtrack to do so this year. Awesome Mix Vol 1 sold 109,000 copies last week (up 83%) and debuted at #3 last week with 60,000.

Frozen, also released by the Disney Music Group, was the first soundtrack this year to get to the top. Hollywood Records released Guardians while Walt Disney Records released Frozen. It's the first time since 2009 that multiple film soundtracks hit the top. That year, three managed to accomplish the feat: Hannah Montana: The Movie, The Twilight Saga: New Moon and Michael Jackson's This Is It.

Guardians is also the first #1 soundtrack that contains nothing but previously released songs. All of the songs were released in the late 1960s and late 1970s. Most were hits on the Billboard Hot 100.

1. Guardians of the Galaxy - Awesome Mix Vol. 1 soundtrack (109,000)
2. Now 51 (94,000)
3. Godsmack - 1000HP (58,000)
4. Spoon - They Want My Soul (39,000)
5. 5 Seconds of Summer - 5 Seconds of Summer (36,000)
6. Tom Petty and the Heartbrekers - Hypnotic Eye (34,000)
7. Eric Clapton & Friends - The Breeze: An Appreciation of JJ Cale (29,000)
8. Frozen soundtrack (28,000)
9. Sam Smith - In The Lonely Hour (27,000)
10. The Vamps - Somebody to You (20,000)

Album sales this week totaled 4.27 million copies, down 1% compared to last week (4.33 million) and down 9% compared to last year (4.7 million). Year-to-date album sales stand at 146.4 million, down 14 percent compared with the same total at this point last year (171 million).
