Busy week with new debuts by Lyfe Jennings, Def Leppard, The Roots, Portishead, Mudcrutch and Tim McGraw...
Madonna's Hard Candy became her seventh #1 album this week, debuting at the top of the Billboard charts after moving 280,000 copies. In the world of female artists, only Barbra Streisand boasts more #1s at eight. Her recent hit single with Justin Timberlake, "4 Minutes", also reached the Top 10 this week, making Madonna the artist with the most Top 10 hits in history with 37. She was previously tied for that honor with Elvis.
Last week's #1, Mariah Carey's E=MC2, drops to #2 in its second week, moving just below 100k. Another former chart topper, Leona Lewis' Spirit, falls from #2 to #3 in its fourth week.
R&B singer Lyfe Jennings debuts at #4 with Lyfe Change. The set features the new single "Never Never Land", which a current Top 30 R&B/Hip-Hop hit.
Following Jennings are 80's metal act Def Leppard, who make their triumphant return to the Top 10 with Songs From The Sparkle Lounge, which enters at #5. It's their eleventh consecutive album to chart in the Top 20, beginning with 1983's #2 hit Pyromania. Sparkle Lounge is the band's first studio album to reach the Top 10 since 1992's chart topper Adrenalize.
In the second half of the Top 10, The Roots claim the #6 spot with their new album Rising Down. It's the hip-hop crew's fourth Top 10 album, following 2006's Game Theory. The first single is called "Get Busy".
Portishead score their best chart positioning ever with Third, their first album in over ten years. The album also debuted at #2 in the UK. The lead single, "Machine Gun", is set to become the band's sixth Top 40 hit there, as well.
Mudcrutch, a reassembling of Tom Petty's 1970's pre-Heartbreakers band, lands at #8 in its first week. The album was promoted by a series of club shows on the west coast. Petty will reteam with the Heartbreakers for a big summer tour with Steve Winwood next month.
Now 27 falls from #6 to #9 in its eighth week on the charts.
Rounding out the Top 10 is Tim McGraw's Wal*Mart exclusive Greatest Hits Vol. 1 & 2. The double disc set is a collection of McGraw's previously released Greatest Hits albums, Greatest Hits and Greatest Hits, Vol. 2: Reflected.
