Beyonce Is "Not Rock & Roll"
Posted by Dan Haggerty on 05.21.2008

Tina Turner says Beyonce Knowles will never be "rock 'n' roll." The singer claims she was an inspiration for Beyonce, but although she is a great singer the former Destiny's Child star will never match her for raw talent. Tina said: "Beyonce was one of the ones that were sitting in front of her little television, her little self looking at the big screen when I was Tina in the 'Ike and Tina Turner days' and she took from all the stars at the time. Diana Ross influenced her, I influenced her. What I like about her is that she knows what she's doing, she really did her homework and decided to stay elegant... She's not rock 'n' roll - she's totally elegant. Unless your rock 'n' roll from the heart you can't mimic that. The stance, the movements, it has to come from the inside."

Tina, 68, and Beyonce, 26, performed together at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards this February. Meanwhile, Tina has announced plans to tour the UK - eight years after retiring from performing live.
The music legend will play four dates starting in March 2009 at London's O2 arena.

Tina said: "After performing with Beyonce at the Grammys, the response was overwhelming... Everywhere I went people were asking me when I was going back on tour. So after a lot of thought and planning we announced an American tour. "

"Now Europe beckons and I don't want to let down all my loyal fans over there."

Jealous much?

Love when old timers hate on the current/future talent. Tina was good back in the day, and may still have some fans left, but why hate on Beyonce.

The article makes it sound like a personal attack. For the most part, she was complimenting Beyonce. All she said is she's not rock & roll, and she's not...she's R&B, just like Tina was early on, with that bit of hiphop that mor or less all R&B has to have these days to stay mainstream. Nothing particularly wrong with that.

Beyonce Is "Not Rock & Roll"

In other news: water is wet and fire is hot.

How could this be construed as insulting, seriously? Tina has always mixed rock and roll and R&B, while Beyonce has gone for more of an R&B/hip-hop mix. They sing different kinds of music. I don't see how that could be construed as a slam.

She wasn't hating, she was saying Beyonce is elegant and she likes that. Actually read it and you'll see Tina doesn't like the "Rock n Roll" kinda thing, but likes ELEGANT women, like Beyonce. Dude, get some glasses or a brain that isn't inside your pants.

I think its funny because If Beyonce is only 26 she wouldn't be old enough to have ever sat in front of the tv to watch Ike and Tina.

I think this falls into the "Captain obvious says' category.

...on a related note, someone please pitch in for hiring a vocal coach. Beyonce desperately needs to learn how to talk English the way it's supposed to be.

Tina is from a time when you said what was on your mind, no candy coating. She wasnt taking away from what Beyonce has done, she is merely pointing out that while Beyonce is gorgeous and a great singer....she lacks that RAW ATTITUDE that made Tina an ICON. Look at some of her performances, Tina OWNED every stage she performed on and commanded the attention of EVERYONE there. By comparison, Beyonce is just standing there.
