Lil Wayne Being Sued For Rolling Stones Sample
Posted by Mitch Michaels on 07.25.2008

A music publishing company that owns the rights to the Rolling Stones' song "Play With Fire" sued Lil Wayne yesterday, saying he released an altered version of the song without permission.

Abkco Music Inc accused Lil Wayne, his artistic collaborators and his record company, a unit of Universal Music Group, of copyright infringement and unfair competition. They're seeking unspecified damages.

Lil Wayne's "Playing with Fire" is a clear derivative of the Rolling Stones song with the original lyrics and music altered in a recognizable way, Abkco said in its lawsuit.

In one example, the lawsuit said a lyric from the Stones song is "But don't play with me, 'cause you're playing with fire," and the Lil Wayne version has the line, "But you can't blame me if I set this stage on fire."

Abkco also said that Lil Wayne's version uses "explicit, sexist and offensive language" and could lead the public to believe the company and the Rolling Stones approved of and authorized the new version.

Bull. The Rolling Stones have always been rap haters. That goes double for thier lawyers and record companies trying to profit off of samples and interpolations. But if Coldplay or Oasis or somebody wanted to cover thier old ass songs it would be all good.

False. You can't use someone else's music in your own without permission. It doesn't matter what genre you're in or who you are. Just ask the Verve.

This is what we get for being Black in America. The Rolling Stones just hate black people!

Not true, a few years back they sued The Verve for "Bittersweet Symphony". They don't just hate rappers, they hate anyone who tries to capitalize on thier itellectual property without thier permission.

yeah lets me this a racist issue because we all know if white people sue black people the racist card flies forgetting the fact that he stole (borrowed) lyrics.

Maybe its because Oasis gets permission to record their covers of their songs, gives them credit in the liner notes and pays them royalties.

If the Rolling Stones are racist, then Lil Wayne worships the devil.

What a bunch of BS.
That sounds nothing like the Stones, nor is it any kind of rip off from that song.

The song by Wayne is god awful, however.

I'm so sick of the Stones.
I wish they would die in a plane crash.

Lil Wayne is a rapist, druggie, gangster.

His music is badass, but I won't be defending him any time soon.

The racist thing here is so ridiculous. The Rolling Stones have always been influenced by black music. The Blues, even funk. They have always given the credit as well to the black community. They have, throughout their career collaborated with too many black artist and producers to mention. To comment that the Rollin Stones are racist just shows how little you actually know about music. It is laughable. Not to mention the Rolling Stones didn't file this suit READ It is the publishing company that bought the Rights to their music. Mick Jagger has alway said it is not possible to never mimic another artist. There are only so many musical notes. However a blatant use of lyrics...you should ask first. Lil Wayne is wrong and please God get him some WD 40 for that whinny voice. Many of the Rolling Stones songs have lyrics that are similar in attitude to Rap attitudes, so they are nothing original either...just listen to Under my Thumb, Bitch, Backstreet girl. They were the original "pimps" The song Play with Fire by the stones had a video. They performed it in 1964 sitting on a Rolls Royce. Even the song Shattered could be called rap, not the beat, it is not hip hop but the talking with music about street life NYC. It was written in 77. Say anything but racist rap haters...that is obviously ignorant
