Bette isn't happy with the performances of today's female singers...
Bette Midler isn't happy that Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and other singers no longer show emotion or tell stories during their performances.
She said: "They don't speak. They don't talk to their audience. They may say, 'Hello, New York' or 'Hello, Las Vegas,' in the beginning, and 'Thank you' in between songs, but they don't talk. They don't tell stories or take the time to make a connection, build a rapport. There's no emotion."
Midler also blames MTV for encouraging artists to lip-synch to their songs when performing live.
"Video really did kill the radio star. After MTV came along, people were seeing their favourite singers in videos, and suddenly there was a certain vision of a song - how it should sound, how it should look. Then in concert, there was no room for improvisation - everyone wanted an exact replica."
Doesn't necessarily sound like a shot...more of a critique. She kinda has a point.

Comparing Britney Spears to Christina Aguilera is ridiculous. Spears does not have 1/10 of the talent Aguilera does.
Is stage banter as important as a good performance? Midler's act is based on nostalgia and the 50 & 60 somethings want that. I doubt the 15 year-old girls do.

She should shut the hell up. She is an old lady who is nothing more than a grumpy old b**ch. She is old just like John McCain. I'm no fan of Britney but I like Christina. I doubt she has seen either of them in concert.
I have lost all respect for Bette Midler. I don't care if Arif Mardin Produced her...God rest his soul.

She was a terrible and overrated performer . Xtina is a way better vocalist than she ever was. Celine Dion even commentated that Aguilera had the best singing voice on the planet.

Bette Midler is OMG Amazing at what she does, she always has been, always will be, Britney and Christina, same, OMG amazing at what they do, but what Christina and Britney do is totally different from Bette, and she should not even compare their careers and what they do... And yes Chrsitina may have a better voice than Britney, but listen to Britney live http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Znsr20aX48s&feature=related.. She has an amaizing voice, All 3 of these women do, but lets see Bette and Christina dance around the stage as action packed as her concerts, then still sing as great as she does.... They cant....But dont get me wron I love all 3, they are all perfectionists at what they do, they just do different things, and you can not compare them......

I have all of Christina Aguilera's Concert Dvds and in Stripped and Back To Basics, Christina talks about how she suffered abuse as a child by at the hands of her father. I dont know about Britney. And Christina writes and produces a lot of her music.

this old hag is just jealous that christina and britney have found their success at early ages britney may be crzy but no one can take away the fact that she has earned her success as well as christina bette is just jealous she doesn't have the pipes christina does and by the way i've seen britney and christina in concert and they do talk to their fans they do try connect with fans...do your homework bette before you start talking sh** bi***

wtf is bette midler talking about. When christina performed her song "oh mother" a while back she was so caught up in emotion she nearly cried. Christina carrys so much emotion in song alone. theres no need to talk. maybe bette did in her time. but nowadays no. how dare she criticise christinas performance, ive been to a 2 of her UK concerts and and the emotion and repoure is incredible. "this is a mans world" "atlast" how much more emotion does she want. as for telling a story christina tends to speak a little but to be honest id be pretty pissed off if she gave a whole speach before every performance, shes a singer not a story teller nor is she a public speaker

Having attended many Bette Midler concerts in the 1970's I can attest to her incredible live performances. Her banter would have on the floor with laughter...a moment later she would break your heart in song. You had to be there; no words or video documentation capture the "live and in person" magic.
