Liam Gallagher Disses Kings of Leon
Posted by Daniel Wilcox on 10.31.2008

Liam Gallagher has accused Kings Of Leon of selling out on their fourth album Only By The Night, saying he is not impressed with the band's latest full-length effort.

"I like the Kings of Leon, but I don't know about this f****** new record," the Oasis frontman tells Rolling Stone magazine. "I like the old stuff, but I like his voice, you can always tell his voice when it comes on."

But when it comes to the group's new LP, Liam says: "It seems to me they've gone for the bucks, man. When they first come out I was going, "Who the f*** is this?" They were cool and now they've all got their sleeves cut off."

"And I'm not dissing them because I f****** really like them, but it's like they've got this U2 sound and you can do better than that."

When I saw the headline, I thought it was petty jealously but I get it. He liked the band before they changed their sound. I felt the same way about the Black Eyed Peas. To me they were great until got Fergie. Now it's like their her backup group and their new stuff is awful.

I'm one of the biggest Kings of Leon fans out there, and frankly, I kinda agree with crazy ol' Liam on this one. The change in the Kings sound has been a gradual one until now, but it really hits like a ton of bricks on Only By The Night. The twang and swagger is gone, replaced by more synth than you can shake a stick at and much moodier, more somber tracks. Not much toe tapping, but "inspiration!" ala U2, Coldplay, etc.

I don't buy the whole "selling out" thing, though. I think it's influenced by tours with bands like the aforementioned U2, Pearl Jam and playing huge gigs at festivals. I think it's the progression of the band as they are attempting to "get over" with a larger audience.

I hold out hope that they will decide to go "back to their roots" and put out a rock n' roll record, but in the meantime a pretty much sold out headlining tour and immense stardom in the UK will have to suffice. That and the fact that Only By The Night is still head and shoulders above 99% of what's out there, including Oasis' new album.

Yeah I agree with Jaime and Butch Please. As a big KOL fan I expected to click on this and get pissed off, considering Liam's history of diarrhea of the mouth. But, I think he makes reasonable points here. KOL really needs to get back to the whiskey-soaked harder sound of their first album and knock off this U2, relationship-y bullshit.

I am kinda feeling what Liam said. I liked their old and the new album, but for different reasons. I get what he's saying they are two different bands, but they're still really good.

Wow. I think that this is the first time that crazy Liam's said something where everyone agrees with him (so far).

i do see where he's coming from, this new music has more mainstream feel to it than their previous works, but i think when they reach a large enough fanbase they could revert back to their previous style, go with what works i guess

The Gallagher's are fuckwits. Anything said by anyone in Oasis, possibly the most talentless band in existence, should be ignored completely.

what does pearl jam have to do with kings of leon butch please? sounds like you are blaming pearl jam for kings of leon sucking.

I don't think he was blaming PJ at all, just the fact that KOL opened for them and saw what the large crowd atmosphere is all about. Pearl Jam is the best band in the world, we can all agree on that, right?

Pearl Jam is the best band in the world. I agree.

Pearl Jam is NOT the best band in the world... but on this site where you're all fucking morons who cream over Metalli-suck then yes I can see how you fuckholes would think that. Idiots.

I get what Liam is getting at in his comments, but this sort of thing happens to almost every band that makes it big.

There will always be a backlash from the fans that were there from the begining. Those fans want the bands to stay close to what made them love them in the begining.

I like the album and I don't want the same album every time. The Beatles would have sucked if they kept making "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" over and over, but they didn't. There's nothing wrong with trying something new.

Thanks to THE REAL MP for being able to read and comprehend what I wrote in a previous comment. But to answer 9238's question, Pearl Jam has a whole to do with Kings of Leon, Eddie Vedder has performed with KoL on several occasions and has said they are among his favorite bands. They took them on tour as an opening act. How can I blame Pearl Jam (who rock) for making the KoL suck (which they don't)? I was simply stating the fact that PJ are big league band, and my opinion that opening for them (along with other big time bands) in major venues influenced the Kings decision to embrace a more "epic" sound that some feel fits better in a sprawling arena.

On their earlier albums, KoL had a honky tonkin' sound that would fit great in any bar or pub across the nation. As they matured, their songs changed, and each passing album showed signs of this change. Only by the Night is a radical departure, but I can understand why they changed it up.

Rolling Stone Q&A with Eddie Vedder, April 26, 2006: "It's a great record, and the song "Slow Night, So Long" -- I had disappeared onto some little island to write and surf and the only record I had besides the Pearl Jam stuff I was working on was that [Aha Shake Heartbreak]. I played it for some of the locals, who didn't know anything outside of their local traditional music, and they had such strong positive reactions to the record. It was a clean slate to bounce it off of. I was excited, and when they opened up for U2, I hadn't met them, but I wanted to tell them that story -- that their record transmits really well to unbiased ears. We started hanging out, and the second night we bashed some tambourines and it felt exciting."
