Metallica Thinking About Internet Release For Next Album
Posted by Dan Marsicano on 11.26.2008

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich told Rollingstone.com about the possibility of the band's next album to be released on the Internet.

"We're free of our record contract," he said. "We have that element of complete freedom with the next record, so we can do whatever we want. We could do an Internet thing or even put it on Andy Greene's record label." He added, "I wouldn't hold my breath for another Metallica record. I'm still decompressing and coming down from the whole experience of the last one, but if we spit one out every four or five years that's not so bad."

Death Magnetic, released in early September, hit the Billboard charts at #1 and has been declared platinum by the RIAA.

No, it would be ironic if they were considering releasing it for FREE on the internet. The whole Napster thing wasn't about the medium, it was about the idea of not being fairly compensated for your work.

The whole Napster thing wasn't about money for Metallica. That's just BS. It was about control of where/when/how their music was distributed.

have to agree with guest - using the most modern and efficient distribution system is completely within Metallica's MO. Giving stuff away for FREE is not. There is a BIG difference.
In 2000, the Napster etc. was used for the blatant 'plain sight' theft of copyrighted material.

Now iTunes and LastFM etc. have shown that the internet can be used to SELL music direct to the consumer, still protecting artists rights and royalties. It makes perfect sense that Metallica, especially with their resources and level of fame that they could make a LOT more money by cutting out costs inherent in third party distribution. Like Lars says, we won't see another Tallica album for four or five years, and by then who knows what will be possible, or even considered industry standard?

All cds should be internet only nowadays. Maybe some extra expensive vinyl presses for those collectors.

an internet album probably won't happen seeing how the music industry is always a step behind, but in 5 years, hopefully albums will be internet only. If it doesn't happen, my guess is that hypocrite Ulrich will fuck it up

No! Bands getting into their twilight years (as a band, not as people) they should put albums out MORE often, not less! Bands like Metallica and Tool whose lead singers are soon to be pushing 50 need to take advantage of the time they have with their voices as good as they can be. Fuck 4 to 5 year waits! As a Tool junkie, I can't stand that shit anymore!

It wasn't even so much about the even and fair distribution of their work, as it was the release of unfinished work. Or, un-debuted work. I Disappear was played on the radio before it was supposed to be, and that made them angry. At least that's what Lars said in an interview.

Let me ask everyone who reads this. When you go to work and bust your ass every single day to become successful but don't get paid, how in the fuck would you feel? Granted, Metallica doesn't need the money but how about other good bands who get ripped off? People are trying justify stealing music and downloading albums for free. Metallica wasn't the only band or person who fought Napster but they get all the shit. If you are a true fan of any band or recording artist, you will buy the album no matter what. Quit trying to justify stealing music and pay for it. All the people who complain probably don't have fuckin' money to pay for it anyway which is why they get mad when they have to.

The day the CD dies is the day I stop paying for music.
