Birthers - Truthers - And Other Nuts
Posted by Joe Rivett on 08.05.2009

Back when we had a Republican president, we got to see the lunatic Left in action. There was the 9/11 Truthers who believed that it was an inside job by the government. They believed that George W Bush was the most incompetent president in history yet they somehow believe he pulled off the biggest cover-up in history. They had this wacky idea that when a huge plane crashes into a building, it shouldn't be destroyed, despite all the scientific inquiries. In addition, they were convinced that the Bush administration was going to attack Iran and Bush would declare martial law to stay in power. Remember that? Sounds pretty nuts yet it was all over the Internet and Left-Wing radio.

Now that we have a Democratic president, the Right-wing wackos (Birthers) are out in full force. First, they tried to win an election by comparing Obama to Britney Spears. When that didn't work they compared him to the messiah. When that didn't work they compared him to Marx. Since nothing has worked, now they are insisting he wasn't born in America because he only has a Certificate of Live Birth and not a Birth Certificate. I was curious what I had so I checked it out and found I also have a Certificate of Live Birth from the state of Massachusetts. I guess I can't be president. Even Anne Coulter is a wise enough white woman not to buy into this hoax! Therefore, the "birthers" have crazier thoughts than Anne Coulter! Something tells me that if Obama was more than half-white, no one would question his American roots.

These aren't the only crazy people and beliefs in our society…

Drug punishers: Despite prohibition being a colossal failure, most Americans would be outraged if a politician suggested legalizing more drugs. Yet, the same politicians want to stop gang violence?

Organic eaters: regular fruits and vegetables are better, cheaper, and feed the world yet people believe it is better to eat food that is infested with bugs that does not grow to be as big or juicy.

Video Game haters: Lieberman/Clinton love to make the case that video games create violent children yet they do not explain why violence rates have been down among children since video games debuted. As games have become more violent, kids get into fewer fights than ever. If children became violent as a result of video games, then children would be running around killing people at an epidemic rate.

I'm not going to even get into scientology, the Nation of Islam, 2012 fanatics and other religions. So the Mayan calendar ends at 2012, well my wife's kitty calendar ends in 2009. I guess I can max out my credit card in December.

The bottom line is that when people feel strongly about something, no matter what evidence you show them, you'll rarely change their hearts and minds. So if you run into a "Truther" or a "Birther" ignore that belief and see if you can find something redeeming in that person.

Obama provided NO BIRTH CERTIFICATE! Republicans are the only ones who can fix this, because this is a matter of LAW, not politics! Why doesn't he just show it? We need one of our OWN KIND in the White house!!

Finally someone from the left points out the correlation between truthers and birthers. Alot of liberals were being intellectually dishonest when it came to the loons.

"Drug punishers: Despite prohibition being a colossal failure, most Americans would be outraged if a politician suggested legalizing more drugs. Yet, the same politicians want to stop gang violence?"

Actually, I don't think most Americans would be outraged. There would definitely be more than a few, and the media would push this to make it seem like MOST Americans would be against it.

I don't know that I would call the Truthers left-wing. 43-percent of *Republicans* believe that the CIA had foreknowledge of the 9/11 attacks.

Both the Truthers and Birthers seem to have a lot of crossover at the libertarian roots - people who believe that foreign bankers are taking over the U.S. through the Federal Reserve and will create ACORN FEMA camps to indoctrinate us into socialism.

538 has a good article on both phenomena.

Why leave something as important as legalized self-destruction up to a democracy?

Use the homosexuals tactics of forcing their viewpoints upon the country through the courts.

Amazing, I agree with Rivett! Gotta be a first! The birthers do absolutely nothing good for those like me that are right of center, that just want to see some honest debate on health care and the economy. They just need to get a life.

Why can't any of you guys write a real column? You should be talking about the important issues. It also wouldn't hurt telling the truth about that piece of shit traitorous sad excuse of a president we have to put up with. All he seems to care about is helping the terrorists and bankrupting the country. Its gotten so bad that Bill Clinton has to fly around doing his damn job. Obama seriosly needs to grow a pair and start working for the American people.

Well, if you're gonna get your info and opinions from a TV show, that's a good one. :D Better than Zimmer and Benjamin, who apparently get all their info from Teletubbies and Olbermann.

I think both Birthers and Truthers are onto something fundamental - politicians are charlatans and tricksters who are hoodwinking the American public.

Anyone who posts something as rediculous as "They believed that George W Bush was the most incompetent president in history yet they somehow believe he pulled off the biggest cover-up in history." Has no business at all writing an article about the subject he chose. There's nothing intelligent found in this article at all and I have no idea why it was even typed.

There is an implicit racism in the whole thing, which is evident in Helen's reference to "our OWN KIND"

You obviously have no idea what the organic food movement is about. First of all, I don't know what you are even talking about by saying that organic food is "infested with bugs" considering I've never had any with bugs in or on it. But the main reason people like myself choose to eat organic food is to avoid all the chemicals like pesticides and hormones that are still there no matter how much you wash the outside.

Hey Joe. Good Column. Not sure if you could say the Truthers were left wingers. One of the biggest proponents was Alex Jones, and aside form Rosie O'Donnell I would challenge you to name a single left wing big name that ummed and ahhed on the subject the way bigots like Republican politicians have been hedging their bets.

Helen... really. No proof. What is this then?

Oh, right. Digital forgery. I could show you the pictures of the earth from space, but I guess you'd still believe the earth was flat...

How about this website that includes news paper clippings announcing his birth?

I'm sorry, but you and Lou Dobbs have been horribly misinformed. Maybe he can go back to complaining about immigration...

"All he seems to care about is helping the terrorists and bankrupting the country. Its gotten so bad that Bill Clinton has to fly around doing his damn job. Obama seriosly needs to grow a pair and start working for the American people."

O.K I'll explain this slowly for you. If Obama went to NK himself he would he would have to meet with Kim Jong Il. So then you morons on the right could yell "He's a meeting with them terrists..he aint no real merican" Also presidents do not conduct prisoner releases, never happens as it lends legitimacy to the actions of the offending state, hence you send a representative.

Amazing how a birth certificate that has been viewed by officials and posted online is not enough evidence. But, yellow cake that no one saw was good enough to go into Iraqi? Give me a break. The only truth here is that the GOP is lost in the wilderness they don't even what is real and isn't real.

Birthers is such a stupid name. With the Hollywood left such a big part of the Obama machine, couldn't these creative types have come up with something better?

Who came up with that? Maddow? I don't watch her show, but I've seen her on the Tonight Show and a few other late night talk shows (NBC parents) and her grasp of the issues was horrendous. She just musters a smirk at various points in her weak arguments and attempts more to malign the opposition than she does to actually put forth reasons for the positions she takes.

At least Hannity memorizes his positions. Granted, throw him off a little and he's a one-trick pony who hammers home the same point without adapting his argument, but he at least attempts to tell the viewer why he believes what he does.

Helen proves why the government needs to screen couples to see if they are intelligent enough and have the right genes to concieve. Thanks for being a waste of good (well, maybe not so good) sperm.

"You obviously have no idea what the organic food movement is about."

Paranoia. The major food poisoning incidents of the last several years have stemmed from improper food HANDLING, something buying organic doesn't even address. If buying six dollar milk makes you happy, go for it. If you think it will help you live longer or healthier, well I'll just pocket the extra $3.50 a gallon and agree to disagree.

""Drug punishers: Despite prohibition being a colossal failure, most Americans would be outraged if a politician suggested legalizing more drugs. Yet, the same politicians want to stop gang violence?"

Actually, I'm *relatively* sure if they decided legalization by popular vote, most Americans would vote to at LEAST legalize pot. In fact, states like Massachusettes and California are putting in plans to do so with overwhelming public support (and, naturally, more red tape than you can shake a bong at) as well as a second attempt in as many years at removing the federal prohibition, therefore allowing the states to decide.

Sadly, here in Canada where it's OBVIOUS that most citizens realize the hypocrisy, incompetence, and ineffectiveness of prohibitions, the politicians are creating a police state with, I assume, the desire of making all those wonderful mistakes that you guys are actually LEARNING from for ourselves.
