Obama Wins Nobel Peace Prize
Posted by Robert Zimmer on 10.09.2009
Distinguished award goes to President Obama for international diplomatic efforts...
In an early-morning surprise, The Nobel Committee announced President Obama was awarded its prestigious Peace Prize for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples," citing the president's efforts at nuclear disarmament and bridging gaps between estranged world cultures.
Obama was chosen from a record 205 nominees this year.
Will this win make up for the Olympic loss, or will Glenn Beck's troglo-acolytes find a way to label the president a Nazi for bringing home the Nobel bacon?
This one's gonna get ugly... better pop some popcorn for next time I check the blog.

Although this does seem more like a vote of confidence for things to come from the international community than an award for actual achievement thus far, It is an interesting move, and I'd like to think it's to send a certain message from the rest of the world to America. Whether or not most of us will get that message (or care to) is another matter.
Now, let the shitstorm tidal wave of negativity begin in 3...2...1...

Obama should wear that Nobel Medallion everyday for at least a year.
Posted By: AdmChesterMynutz (Guest) on October 09, 2009 at 11:39 AM
Actually, you really can't direct any negativity at Obama for this. He didn't do anything (slight pun intended) to get the award. It was given to him.
But, it does say quite a bit about how political the award has become. Hell, the chairman of the commitee basically said it was given to him in the hopes of things to come (I'm paraphrasing, but you can find the article).
I always thought the award was to reward deeds, not in anticipation of deeds. But I will say this, if he does all the things the committee expects him to do, I'll be the first to tip my hat to him.

Sure beats Jimmy Carter getting one this year or Bill Clinton for his efforts in rescuing those two people from Korea.

I dont get it. Why not next year or the year after...you know, after he has actually done something to earn it. If all it takes is to say your going to do these great things then I'll change the world for the better!...now give me that prize money and go away

I'm not here to bash Obama, but Mr. Zimmer...you do realize that he was nominated for the award within 12 days of taking office, don't you? Not even Lincoln or Washington could find the White House water cooler within that time. I'm not a right wing nutjob nor do I wish to be full of negativity, but can you objectivley say that ANY person, regardless of political background, should be eligable for a Nobel Peace Prize after less then two weeks in power? If you say yes, then I begin to worry about 2 things:
1. How a Bush Presidencey has really disinfranchised people so much to the point that they are willing to go beyond the point of common sense in order to defend those who would never defend Bush or those like him.
2. How much our current President can do wrong and how long he can do it before his supporters fully realize it.
And as far as only people like Glen Beck crying foul on this one, you should go to the Op-Ed's of BBC, Time, MSNBC, CNN, or the AP...even normal supporters of President Obama conceed that this is at least a bit premature. Of a poll of close to 300,000 on MSNBC a combination of 76% say that this accolade is not deserved.
Take care and have a good weekend.

fox news is going crap all over this story for sure. bush alienated the world. obama is willing to talk to them.
Posted By: jd (Guest) on October 09, 2009 at 01:14 PM
Considering he had only been inaugurated for 2 weeks when the deadline for nominations came up and the fact that he's accomplished almost NOTHING except piss people off, he shouldn't receive SHIT! I'm sure there were many other nominees that are far more deserving... Then again, look at the other Presidents that won the Nobel Peace Prize: Carter (WHY WON'T HE DIE ALREADY?!), Wilson, and Roosevelt!
Can anyone say PUPPETS?!
I wonder whose dick he sucked to get the award! Or maybe it was sympathy because we can't afford the Olympic Games, the dollar is almost extinct, and we have a dictator worse than Bush for a President (hell, even Chavez and Castro know it)!
Posted By: Spyke (Guest) on October 09, 2009 at 01:46 PM
Lets be clear: he didn't get it for anything he has done - he got it for NOT being George Bush!!

I'm no Obama hater, and I actually like the guy and hope he does well, but he doesn't deserve the award.
What has he done for peace, really? It seems to me he was given this mostly for not being George W Bush (which, admittedly, is a very good thing in a leader). I hope it serves to influence him to work for peace, so after his term(s) are over people can genuinely say he deserves the award though.
This isn't his fault, but look for FOX to bash him for this somehow.

"1. How a Bush Presidencey has really disinfranchised people so much to the point that they are willing to go beyond the point of common sense in order to defend those who would never defend Bush or those like him."
Had Bush stayed out of Iraq, he probably would have had a good case for a Nobel Peace Prize for his work in Africa. No American president has done as much for the people of Africa as George W. Bush did... and he wasn't even born there!

Well he did pretty much completely cave to the republicans on health care instead of actually acting like a president and fighting to reform a broken system. That's pretty peaceful.
Posted By: Guest#8196 (Guest) on October 09, 2009 at 04:18 PM
I almost seriously wonder if the international committee that selected Obama did so deliberately just for the amusement of watching Americans divide themselves again and look stupid for the entertainment of the rest of the world. I think the brilliant folks knew what would happen if Obama won and Americans are playing right into their hands getting their tails wagged.
Posted By: Chuk (Guest) on October 09, 2009 at 04:19 PM
He won the Nobel Peace Prize for not being George W. Bush, it really is that simple. It sure as hell was not for actually doing anything unless "thinking good thoughts about peace" constitutes "doing something". And if you read the global press, the sneering at this absurdity is by no means confined to the so-called "right".

Obama needed a victory to save face after the loss of the Olympics, an all-but-dead public option in the Health care Bill and Acorn controversy. I would bet his people pulled some strings to get this for him.

Barack Hussein Obama has been given the Nobel Peace Prize?! You have GOT to be shitting me! For what?! I thought one had to actually achieve something to be given this honor. I was unaware that all it took was a bunch of empty promises to snag the award. If I'd have known, I would have thrown my hat into the ring as well, seeing as how I'm going to solve the thousand-years-old conflict in the Middle East with only Guitar Hero and a couple of large pizzas. See how easy that was?! Sheesh.

The President deserves credit for heralding in a new age of modern diplomacy and proving as leader for the greatest nation on the earth that America is ready to step up and try to make the world a better place by working together with its fellow countries on Earth. His election after a campaign run on intelligent discourse, against nuclear proliferation and willingness to talk with our enemies to find a common ground proves that America has graduated from the dark ages of cowboy diplomacy. Congratulations to the President and I am proud for this country to be finally recognized as a true force for real and lasting peace which can only bolster our image in the world.

Being a freshman senator does not put you on the "global stage".
The Nobel people pretty much said he got the award because they hoped it would inspire other countries to listen to his talks about peace and disarmament. Of course, all Obama does is talk about it.
Can someone, anyone, name ONE thing Obama has done (not said, but done) to promote world peace?
Posted By: August (Guest) on October 10, 2009 at 12:29 AM
06958, clinton didn't win a nobel peace prize, in fact he's the only modern dem who hasn't won it. plus how silly does this make the nobel peace prize, as mohatma ghandi never won it, but obama wins it for what, becuase he can give a good speech. Why not wait to give obama the peace prize, as hello he could still send 40,000 troops to afgahnstian, plus there were many more deserving people, as some of the fianlists, were the jailed disadents in china, zimbabwe's opposition leader, a muslim woman whose trying to fight hardline isalamits, i mean what next usama bin laden winning, how about a-jad.
the nobel peace prize is basically worthless now, it doesn't mean a thing, and it will not generate any good will for obama, and just fuels the fire with the gop, as also regan was never given the prize, but in 1990, gorbachev got it, but not regan, who did more to stop rouge nations, then obama has, and it looks like the carrot and stick approach isn't going to work with iran, as they continue there nuclear program

"Obama barely did anything in the Senate, and nothing on the "world stage" that would warrant a Nobel. You liberals are out of your minds. Obama did not even have enough clout to get the Olympics. Please."
Jesus himself couldn't have pulled the Olympics for America. That had more to do with the International Olympic committee having issues with the USOC than anything else, because the USOC has been reneging on deals and being all-around douchebags. People blaming Obama for losing the Olympic bid are fucking idiots and need to do some basic research. Shit, all you have to do is read Sports Illustrated since even they outlined why we lost out to Brazil, and they don't have any interest in political slant being a fucking sports rag.
Posted By: Guest#8989 (Guest) on October 10, 2009 at 02:05 AM
My question is why are the Olympics so damn important? The Olympics have been held here 8 times, and who's bright F******* idea was it to go "hey, lets host he Olympics!" Like this country has the money to do it??

Umm....Obama didn't proclaim himself the winner. He received the award.
Weird that all the people who claim Obama is inept and an empty suit and blahblarghblah are the same folks who think he is SO POWERFUL that he can declare himself the Nobel Peace Prize winner AND single-handedly with no help from any other person ever ever ever destroy America in the span of 9 months.
Explain that to me fucktards!

"Being a freshman senator does not put you on the "global stage"."
Being a candidate for the highest office of the most-powerful nation puts you on the global stage.
"Can someone, anyone, name ONE thing Obama has done (not said, but done) to promote world peace?"
First, it's asinine to exclude speeches from the threshold for consideration. Most Nobel Prize winners won it for speeches they made or articles they wrote.
Would you say that Carl von Ossietzky didn't deserve it in 1935 for opposing Hitler's rise because he only "wrote" things in his newspaper? Or Linus Carl Pauling for only making speeches against nuclear weapons?
Second, since Obama seems to have a higher threshold than everyone else:
1 He has directed his military leaders to end the War in Iraq.
2. He has opened renegotiations for the extension and expansion of START - the nuclear non-proliferation agreement.
3. He has proposed sweeping changes for climate change legislation.
4. He's doubled U.S. spending on foreign aid.
5. He's set a deadline for the closure of Guantanamo Bay.
