A Decade of Destruction
Posted by Joe Rivett on 12.27.2009

The last decade did not go so well for America. It doesn't take a genius to point out what went wrong so I'll limit it to just a few of the biggies.

• The largest terrorist attack in our nation's history.
• No WMDs found in Iraq despite the mushroom cloud warnings.
• The job still not done in Afghanistan.
• New Orleans looking similar to a third world country in the midst of a civil war.
• Double digit unemployment.
• Double digit trillion dollar deficits.
• GM almost dies.
• Partisanship in Washington appears to be at an all time high.

So it was probably the worst decade since the 70s when we had a crook and a pessimistic peanut farmer as a president, (I guess Gerry Ford wasn't so bad after all). At least the 80s had good foreign policy and I think we can all agree that the 90s went fairly smooth.

I think the next decade will be better. The economy may not roar like it did in the late 90s but maybe we learned not to pay too much for a house or to buy a car that gets the gas mileage of the tank. Unemployment should get better and it appears that exports are getting back to normal.

The Middle East is still as crazy as ever, but maybe our nation learned that it is easy to overthrow a dictator but much harder to run his country without mass terror. Iraq has settled down and Obama made the right decision in sending more troops along with having expectations/goals.

The deficit will probably never go away, but the health care bill will decrease the cost of Medicare by billions. In addition, if the Republicans ever take back power, they are going to have a hard time increasing the deficit with tax cuts this time around considering this nation is no where near a surplus. I also don't expect the deficits to be as high in the following years with the worst of the recession over and people actually making money to be taxed in the stock market again. Not to be forgotten is that many of the banks and insurance companies will be able to pay TARP money back.

While there will always be terrorism, our nation learned its lesson after 9/11 and I doubt Obama will be telling his staffers "you covered your ass" when they bring him intelligence reports. I'm fairly surprised there hasn't been another major terrorist attack which means the war in Afghanistan has obviously destabilized Al Qaeda and maybe Bush was right that it doesn't matter if they get Bin Laden.

While many were upset that GM was bailed out, it will pay dividends in the long run. Their automobiles have already improved greatly and Ford is putting out quality as well or better than its Asian counterparts.

There are many things that need to be improved in the following decade:
• Infrastructure is awful.
• Iran is going to need to be addressed.
• Health care costs will still be too high even if/when the bill passes.
• Increased energy independence.
• Partisanship and Special Interests that go against America's interest.

Out of all of these problems it is sad that I'm more concerned about our own government's functioning than Iran. Our legislatures will do anything to protect their own jobs and campaign contributions over the interest of us. But isn't our government by the people? Therefore, if the government is messed up then maybe the American people are messed up. We have no one to blame but ourselves for this partisanship. We are too afraid to throw the bums out. We whine about the deficit and then dry hump our Senators when they bring pork home. We whine about health care until someone actually tries to do something about it, then we whine too many people will have health care!

So I think the next decade will be better than the previous and the only thing I fear is us.

"but the health care bill will decrease the cost of Medicare by billions"

===> Looks like you drank the CBO Kool-Aid. This is only true if future Congresses actually go through with the payment cuts in the bill. Since they've always removed those cuts in the past (no matter who is in power), what makes you think they'll suddenly keep the cuts in the future?

Without that fuzzy accounting trick, this bill will NOT decrease the cost of ANYTHING by billions. Don't be so naive.

You mean like ignoring the reports of the father of the terrorist of the guy who tried to blow up the plane? With Napolitano saying that it went according to plan? Or how about not preventing Fort Hood when the signs were all there? Obama's administration is of to a good start, I guess.

Fuzzy accounting? No. Expecting people to follow through with what they're supposed to may be naive, but its not fuzzy accounting.

New Orleans was a hell-hole long, LONG before Katrina. Other than the Quarter, it generally was not a place anyone would want to be.

I generally agree with the optimism.

If I cut your salary by a factor of four in one year then tell you I won't cut your salary the next year, would you consider it progress? If so, then you will probably believe that the current Administration will reduce "the deficit". Much like you probably believed the current Administration when they told you they would eliminate earmarks.

There is nothing fuzzy about not including the actual true all-end costs of the program in the legislation. Such as the nearly $500 billion unfunded medicaid mandate that is imposed on State budgets.

Agree with Jimbo.

By her comments over the weekend, I think he said "you covered your ass" to Napolitano when learning of the latest jhadist hand being extended to the United States.

"Partisanship in Washington appears to be at an all time high"

This is the biggest problem in my opinion. With this type of partisainship it becomes very difficult to make any of the changes that need to be made. It seems to me like republicans being the minority are banding together to spite any bill that the democrats propose (Franken Rape Amendment anyone). Not one of the 30 republicans who voted against it has given me any reason to convince me that this should not have passed. Even worse, some of the republicans that voted against it have accused Franken of making them look bad(wait, what!?) and then questioning his ability to reach across the aisle (huh). http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1209/30088.html

As for the future, our infastructure does need work, not just bridges and roads, but our energy grid as well, which I hope will help our energy dillemma. Iran I hope will be resolved early in the next decade, my guess is they get far enough to prove that they can make a bomb but never go so far as to make one. As for partisianship we have an opportunity in 2010 to vote out every representative in the house, all 435, as well as 1/3 of the senate. We need to choose wisely.

Really hoping the next decade is better.

Obama is the epitome of what the 00's were all about: ALL NEW STYLE-- SAME STALE FLAVOR!

Or as JR would say, we're a nation of all sizzle and no steak

"At least the 80s had good foreign policy and I think we can all agree that the 90s went fairly smooth."

In retrospect, the foreign policy of the 80s accomplished what its designers intended, the dissolution of the Soviet Union. However, let us not forget our mistakes in Afghanistan.

As bad as it may have been, it certainly wasn't in as bad a shape as it is now - you know, before Katrina the houses were still standing, for example.

Um... Joe, it wasn't a terrorist attack on 9-11-01. According to our president it is a "man caused disaster." Lets just set the record straight.

Woody, did you SEE those houses? Standing is not an accurate term for how they used to be. Leaning? Dipping? More accurate. Also accurate: you needed a cop or military to walk into most neighborhoods back then. Same as now. Lateral move.

World Trade Center Bombing, Waco, Oklahoma City Bombing, Hurricane Andrew, blowing up Aspirin factories and Chinese embassies from bad intel and flat out fuck ups, conflicts in Rwanda and Somalia, Kosovo, vomiting on Japanese PMs, ect.

Just a small bit of things off the top of my head that happened in the 90s. The 00 might have had it's share of messed up stuff that happened but the 90s sure as hell wasn't sunshine and rainbows.

New Orleans is in MUCH better shape with a smaller population and growing economy/job market.

Stop drinking the mass-media kool-aid. That city was awful before, and now it's actually trying to do something with itself...

Also Joe, there is no war on terror. There is a "overseas contingency operation"

That will get it done.

All I got out of it "blah blah blah I'm a raging liberal dooche blah blah blah Republicans bad."

Joe, I'm surprise you can even muster up the brain power to even turn on your computer let alone spew garbage like that. Just more fear mongering from the wackos out there, left or right. Do everyone a favor and give up all political opinions you have.

The 2000 decade failed horribly and finished with a big explaination point when the idiots of America voted in Obama.
