The Politics of Super Bowl Advertising
Posted by Enrique on 02.03.2010
A matter of persuasion...
Happy Super Bowl week, dear readers! Super Bowl season has its own MSM clichés, and one of the more tiresome is that more people watch the advertisements than the game. Oh c'mon, that's just silly. When a pollster calls and asks you if you watch the Super bowl for the ads, don't be a dumbass and say "yes." Christ. You're not even going to remember any of them the next day. For fun, when you go into work on Monday, ask your colleagues to name five companies that advertised during the Super Bowl. More than likely, they'll remember a mascot or a gimmick, but they'll have a hard time naming five brands. Try it, it's good for laugh. You're welcome.
One of the advertisers they won't remember is the one paying for a pro-life ad featuring college football star Tim Tebow. You may have heard some lawyers and so-called "women's groups" are whining about CBS agreeing to run a politically charged spot. For our story this week, let's manufacture some outrage over the fact that politics poisons everything. Jesus, can't we just a watch a football game between two teams we don't care about without all the drama?
The story so far…
The sponsor no one will remember Monday is Focus on the Family, which describes itself as "a global non-profit Christian organization with a vision for healing brokenness in families, communities and societies worldwide through Christ." The group's founder is James Dobson, who apparently once said same sex marriage "will destroy the earth." So basically, they're a bunch of religious nutters.
No one has seen the Tebow ad yet, so it would be unfair to criticize it from a position of ignorance. On the other hand, longtime readers may know I never let my own ignorance get in the way of a good argument. Let me be clear – I know nothing about Tim Tebow. I follow professional sports as much as the next guy, but I don't pay attention to college sports at all. (Although I did go to a couple of Marquette games when Dwayne Wade was there, because it was local, etc.) I couldn't tell you anything about the BCS, other than that the government should stay the hell out of it. March Madness means nothing to me – at that time of year I'm following Brewers spring training. But apparently this Tebow follow is like the Dwayne Wade of football, so good for him.
According the Focus of the Family, the theme of the ad will be "Celebrate Family, Celebrate Life." And as we all know, there's one group of people that hates family and life – fucking lawyers:
[Incomprehensibly irritating celebrity lawyer Gloria Allred] says that she hopes she never sees the ad on air, but if she does she "hopes that the Federal Communications Commission and the Federal Trade Commission will be watching it and evaluating it for misleading advertising too."
Allred warns, "If this ad airs and fails to disclose that abortions were illegal at the time Ms. Tebow made her "choice", then I intend to file a formal complaint of misleading advertising with those federal commissions."
To be sure, it may not be fair to smear all attorneys by comparing them to a particularly obnoxious, self-serving parasite like Gloria Allred. On the other hand, this is the profession that produced the truculent douchebaggery of John Edwards, so lawyers haven't done anything lately to earn the benefit of doubt.
Personally, I'm militantly pro-choice. I don't even mind the term "pro-abortion." Even so, it's galling to see some scum lawyer threatening to involve the FCC in advertisements by a bunch of Christian busybodies. I'm perfectly comfortable with the fact free speech applies to people whose choices I don't approve of. (Even dorks who write Bible citations in their eye black strips.) If nothing else, the Tebow ad will be novel. I'm bored of seeing ads with Flo the car insurance shill. I mean, I'm sure she's a nice lady and everything, but I couldn't get away from Flo if I tried. She's worse than Peyton Manning. How did goofy Flo become the most ubiquitous advertising icon since the Energizer bunny?
Get out of my life
Another novel ad would have been the one by online dating service Man Crunch (motto: "Putting the man back in romance"). This is one of those cases where the sponsor got a nice publicity bounce from the rejection of its ad. I couldn't have named one gay matchmaking web site before last week (because I'm so TOTALLY heterosexual). Now I can name one. Good for Man Crunch. And it doesn't hurt that the ad is hilarious.
You can't even see actual lip-to-lip contact, and the two actors are clearly not even fake kissing. I bet the late Charlton Heston would have had a laugh at that. Obviously, CBS is under no obligation to take Man Crunch's money, but it would have been a heartwarming gay rights milestone if they had. As far as I know, no one at Man Crunch is threatening to sue CBS for crimes against humanity, but you've got to admit their spokeswoman made a great point about double standards in advertising standards and practices: "If the ad showed a man and woman kissing it would have been accepted. You see ads for erectile dysfunction morning, noon, and night. It's discriminatory that they won't show this."
I'm not blessed with children myself, but I have noticed several television spots for these so-called erectile enhancement products during sporting events. I can't imagine they are any less difficult to explain to minors than the Man Crunch ad. And it's not as if Super Bowl broadcasters have eschewed semi-racy content in the past.
You will always be close to our hearts, Candice
Oh well. It's a shame we probably won't see any groundbreaking Super Bowl ads this year. I suppose we'll just have to watch the game. At least on Monday we'll be able to remember who won.
How is a medical condition the same as being homosexual? Not sure I see the discrimination in allowing one over the other. Better comparison would be
Kay Jewelers and hetros kissing.

Dumbest commercials in history: GoDaddy.com. Seriously, whoever came up with THAT shit should be shot. The nation gets dumber every time one comes on.

It doesn't bother anyone that Tim Tebow's mother is a liar? Her doctor would have to have been suicidal to suggest an abortion to her in the Philippines. Abortion was illegal under any circumstances there, including the life of the mother, in that backwards set of islands. When I was growing up, we had this thing called truth in advertising laws. I guess in addition to their own standards, they're ignoring those laws. What ever it takes to catapult the propaganda.

You want to rip Obama...Don't like it but FINE
You Dont like Tebow...Even Better
BUT FOR GOD SAKE LAY OFF FLO!!!

Coyotespaw,
So NOT killing babies is backward. Hmm. Interesting reasoning. Guess that makes you a progressive? So, given that what you said about the Philippines is true (I don't know one way or the the other if it is), then can't the commercial also be spun as a pro-choice commercial? If she said "Hey, they wouldn't let me have an abortion in the Philippines, but even if they did I still would have had the baby" would that piss you off as much being a pro-choicer. Because really then the commercial becomes a pro-choice commercial, does it not? And then everybody wins and you can stop getting upset over women who simply advocate for other women to not murder their babies.

if it was legal or not at the time, if they dont say that, how is that lying? just because something is illegal doenst mean its not happening. so who cares it it was legal, if all she is saying is, 'im glad i didnt do it. . .'
and this add wont be lost on Monday since your already talking about it...the media will talk about it again after it airs and it will be all over the place..unless another tit pops out at half time that is ;)

Yes, but would those laws apply here? Afterall, they aren't advertising a product.

I actually like the Flo character...Enrique!

I hate your article for claiming no one cares about the Saints. I would say that I've waited my whole life for them to do "really well", but the waiting actually started well before I was born.
That's a long time to wait for a "really good" team.
Everything else you said was fine, but I have to leave a smarky comment for dissing the Saints.

Probably not.

Re: Lying
Presumably, she could have just flown back to the U.S. and had an abortion. She was still an American citizen. It's not out of the realm of possibility that a doctor advised her that they couldn't do it but she would be better off returning to the U.S. where it is legal.

I honestly don't get pro-choice folks like Coyotespaw. Why do they get their panties in such a ruffle when a lady chooses to have child over aborting premature human?
I do not believe government should be regulating patient-doctor relations including the decision to prematurely end the development of a human life.

On a not-so-cereal beat, Flo is hot. The sooner she is in Maxim or Playboy the better. She's a goof but there are far worse commercials out there.

I have no problem with Tim Tebow doing a pro-life ad. I could care less about his stance on the subject. I don't agree with his stance, but to each his own. I'm very pro-choice. I have my reasons for this, and I'm not going to change that. But if someone is pro-life, God bless them.
I do have a problem with this ad running during the Super Bowl. I don't want morality and politics in my football. Sports are an escape ffrom that stuff. Can't we have that escape?
And, for the record, the ManCrunch ad is funny as hell. The name of the company is also hilarious.

@Cmatt666 -
I hear where you're coming from, but that horse left the barn long ago, so the argument holds no water. The 2008 World Series was laden with ads in advance of that year's elections and, as a Massachusetts resident, I can't even tell you how many Brown v. Coakley ads I saw during NFL playoff games. If you don't want "morality and politics in (your) football," then exercise your power of the remote control. It's not like the commercials are running at the same time as the game itself.

How do you fail this miserably?
Posted By: Cap (Guest) on February 05, 2010 at 02:37 AM
As a pro-choice, anti-religion atheist with an axe to grind against James Dobson and his "family", I have absolutely no problem with this advertisement. Abortion is an unfortunate practice that should be avoided in all but the most dire circumstances.
Posted By: Guest#5304 (Guest) on February 05, 2010 at 03:32 AM
Well, I haven't seen the commercial yet, but I'm willing to bet that they will not be advocating overturning Roe vs. Wade or anything like that. She will probably just be saying that she's glad that she didn't abort her child. This is a very valid position. Shouldn't women be allowed to hear the positions of people who have made different decisions? Is it so horrible to say to someone that if you make the decision to have your baby, you will probably not regret that decision in 20 years. Is that a lie?

There has been a Jay Alexander Mitchell appearance!! Good luck sunday, I am a Hawk fan and 2005 was incredible. I hope the Saints fare better than Seattle did.
As far as Tebow goes, I thought the tone of the commercial was the mom was happy her decision turned out well becuase she has a well adjusted, successful kid. Leave to the fetus mutilation lobby to get bent out of shape if anyone might have a positive pro life message. How progressive and tolerant of the left to hear other points of view. Parasites like Gloria Allred do not help their cause.

As opposed to the Rights all inclusive messages of tolerance we always here about? um ok then whatever its only one side that is the problem....
how about both sides are assholes who need to get their heads out of their asses and come back to the reality of what is really going on in the country...how about that...anti-abortion or Pro-choice doesn't really matter because most of the people bitching and moaning about this NEVER have to make such a decision and it NEVER effects their lives at all one bit.

When I was a child growing up and I saw ads for natural male enhancement, I thought it was for hairloss up until the age of 10.

"how about both sides are assholes who need to get their heads out of their asses and come back to the reality of what is really going on in the country"
Clearly you are a racist for using logic and not agreeing with the left.

Enrique,
This is one of the few times I actually agree with you. Excellent article; however, I think Flo is cute in that dorky-not-cute sort of way. Ya know? But, we all have our own opinions and everything. That is what is good about the US.
Posted By: David (Guest) on February 06, 2010 at 10:13 AM
well and now everyone has seen the ad, and it looks like focus on the family didn't have to pay 2.5 million, as the spot ran during the pre-game, and guess what it wasn't a preachy ad, and frankly i wish focus had released the ad sooner, as it was a simple ad, that told her story, and gave the groups website, if you wanted to learn more about tebow's story, but frankly it was a low-key ad that will be forgotten
Posted By: coby preimesberger (Guest) on February 07, 2010 at 03:03 PM
So not only is the Tebow ad NOTHING, but Pbama is appearing in an interview during the pregame show that at least half the Super Bowl audience is already watching. So, my fellow Democrats......would you shut the fuck up already?
Posted By: AdamS (Guest) on February 07, 2010 at 04:39 PM
I hope the left and the womens abortion advocasy groups feel shame for making a big deal over nothing and frankly making complete asses out of themselves.
Posted By: John (Guest) on February 08, 2010 at 04:23 PM
What was the big deal, that comercial only problem was it was boring. Can Gloria Allred sue for that?
I wish womens groups would focus on real issues instead of a meaningless comercial.
Posted By: Guest#6937 (Guest) on February 08, 2010 at 04:47 PM
How was that a political add? What a gigantic waste of time. Thanks to the womens groups for giving focus on the family a bunch of free publicity. Dumb bitches!
Posted By: Guest#7217 (Guest) on February 08, 2010 at 08:19 PM
If I was Focus on the Family, I would've let slip the idea of a much stronger commercial, and then let them shoot themselves in the foot while I had THIS commercial planned the whole time.
Posted By: AdamS (Guest) on February 08, 2010 at 08:53 PM
i have a feeling enrique might do a follow-up to this article, as now that the ad has aired, both now and women's meda rights center, decry this ad, for violence against women, ad oh yeah on the women's media rights center the stupidity didn't stop there, they also decried the e-trade love triangle ad, for denegrating baby girls, people these are ads, you need to get a life, i mean you wonder why women's rights aren'ttaken seriosuly, it's becuase, you do stupid things like this, there commericals, not reality
Posted By: coby preimesberger (Guest) on February 09, 2010 at 12:04 AM
