Midwest Monday News 10.17.05
Posted by Steven Bellah on 10.17.2005

Well, lots to cover this week, so lets get to it:

First, a little sports

New England Patriots “Greatest Team Ever Assembled” Update: A 30-21 loss to Denver yesterday and a 3-3 record means that the dynasty is dead—at least that’s what you’ll hear on ESPN tomorrow.

And THANK GOD we won’t have the Red Sox or the Yankees in the World Series this year. Remember 10 years ago when for 4 or 5 years in a row the NFL was all about the Cowboys or the 49ers? It’s been that way recently with Boston and New York. Now, Boston’s comeback from a 3-0 deficit to win the ALCS and then sweeping the Cardinals in the World Series was a magical thing. I loved every second of it, and watching them win game seven against the Yankees where one year earlier I had laid on the floor of the same bar screaming in agony after Aaron FUCKING Boone’s home run was even more magical.

But with all that said, the curse is broken, now let someone else have a chance. I hope it’s the Astros and White Sox in the series, since neither of them have won a Series in 435 years (Sox) or ever (Astros). I’m personally pulling for the White Sox, as they and the Cubs need to break their curses as well. Then everyone will be happy. That is, except my Royals, who will never win anything as long as David “I’m a billionaire owner of Wal-Mart but can’t spend more than 15 million in one year” Glass owns the team.

On to the news……

That’s one small step for man…….

Well, it seems like the Iraqi constitution has passed, as it’s the lead story on Yahoo news as I am typing this on Sunday night. I could care less what kind of constitution or government it is. All that I want is a government installed so we can get the hell out of there. For all you Bush haters who want Iraq to fail in every way, stop. Yes, I hate that we are at war—but we aren’t leaving until the job is done. It doesn’t matter how many days Cindy Sheehan shits in a Johnny on the Spot®, Bushie and company aren’t going to let up and pull the troops without being victorious first. They can’t afford that kind of mark on their legacy.

So, this election was a good thing for all involved. But let’s not spend too much time talking about how much of a success it is, because there is a lot of work to do.

Well, I don’t recall…..Well, I can’t remember…..

Judith Miller is doing her best Ronald Reagan impression, suddenly forgetting who leaked Valerie Plame’s name to her after going to jail for refusing to name her source.

You know, it’s one thing to protect your source, but to flat out lie and change your story is absurd. I have a prediction. In fact, I’m going to post the link here for you to see for yourself. I’m typing this on Sunday night, before Rush Limbaugh has his show on Monday. But I can guarantee you that he will be all over this like he was on the Dan Rather CBS memogate fiasco.

Wait until around 5pm or so Monday evening to give them time to post the 55,000 word transcript, but go to Rush’s home page. I hate to give his site free, meaningless hits, but his long winded “I told you so!” rant will just prove how people like him wait to pounce on stuff like this.

Now apparently Scooter Libby (Cheney’s chief of staff) might have to fall on his sword, as now some notes that Miller had made during an interview/lunch with Libby said “Wife works at bureau?” among other things. Here is Miller’s account of everything. Yes, it’s from MichaelMoore.com, but the content is what’s important.

But I think we all want Karl Rove to be the one caught in this one. That would make all the Bush haters happy. Does anyone else seem to be getting a Watergate vibe from all of this? Only time will tell.

For all of you who keep saying our leaders do not lie to us…..

Dubya held a Q&A with soldiers in Iraq Thursday, and it was clear to anyone with a brain that the entire thing had been thoroughly rehearsed, especially the soldiers answers. Seriously, go watch the damn thing for yourselves and decide (RealPlayer required). How can ANYONE say that the whole thing wasn’t one big pre-planned pep rally? How can ANYONE say that this whole thing, including the robotic answers and shit eating grins on each soldier wasn’t fake? Well, Scott McClellan did. From his press briefing on Thursday:

Q: Scott, why did the administration feel it was necessary to coach the soldiers that the President talked to this morning in Iraq?

MR. McCLELLAN: I'm sorry, I don't know what you're suggesting.

Q: Well, they discussed the questions ahead of time. They were told exactly what the President would ask, and they were coached, in terms of who would answer what question, and how they would pass the microphone.

MR. McCLELLAN: I'm sorry, are you suggesting that what our troops were saying was not sincere, or what they said was not their own thoughts?

Yes Scott, he and I are both suggesting that the whole thing was a fucking scripted play, and a bad one at that. I didn’t take drama in high school because the teacher taught the students to overact, William Shatner style. Those soldiers acted the same way.

Listen, I know the Bush administration has fallen on hard times (39% approval rating, anyone?), but DO NOT insult my intelligence by staging something like you did on Thursday. If the numbers in that approval rating were reversed, you can bet Bush wouldn’t be asking soldiers ANYTHING. He’d be down in Crawford sawing tree stumps.

My thoughts on Harriet Myers

Harriet Myers is a red herring. A MacGuffin. A mirage. She is only being nominated so that everyone will hate her and she can then withdrawal her nomination, opening the door for Bush to nominate the most Right Wing candidate possible. Then the congressional Republicans will say, “Just confirm this new nominee. We’ve already lost the last one. Do it for the comfort of the country.”

I must say, Ann Coulter ripping Bush a new one, calling him a “drunk” has been a mirror universe moment. That is the equivalent of Bill Clinton getting a Richard Nixon tattoo, at least to me.

In a nutshell, don’t be shocked if Harriet Myers “voluntarily” removes her candidacy from consideration before October is up. You heard it here, um, 8th.

Plugs

Joe Rivett comes to the Defense of Harriet Myers.

Jason Easley’s Political Universe, focusing on Bush’s shitty poll numbers.

See you next Week!
