Nuclear Iran and the Multi-Polar World
Posted by Mark Radulich on 08.23.2010
A look at world as it is today through the events in Iran...
What is worth going to nuclear war over? That used to be a question that only the US and the Soviet Union had to answer. They were the lone superpowers with nuclear weapons in what was once a bi-polar world in the wake of World War II. However, 65 years have passed and in that time the world has become a much different place. Despite "winning" the Cold War, the US has found itself not the undisputed leader of a single pole world but rather one of many poles in the new multi-polar world. Between those on the left that wanted equally shared power throughout the world with no one nation leading the pack and those on the right that wanted unfettered free trade and globalization, both have gotten their wish. The United States as a superpower, both militarily and financially is an artifact of the 20th Century. We are now part of a one-world-nation, whether we like it or not.
And clearly we as a country are not ready for the repercussions of global singularity. Since the 2008 economic correction I've seen countless promises of a return to pre-meltdown financial status and manufacturing superiority. I've seen the average American cry out for a solution to "fix" the economy. Countless entertainers on the radio clamor for, "tax cuts to stimulate the economy" while the current presidential administration leverages the country to the hilt in order to "create jobs" for the working class. There's this ever-fleeting degree of hope that somehow America will return to the boom years of the 1950's and we'll resume our role as the financial leader of the modern world. That's the rub right there; the world has changed considerably since the end of World War II. The very nature of free trade, global markets, interconnected economies and nuclear proliferation means we are not alone in the world any longer. At best, we're a large state in a global country and our neighbors are China, India, Russia, Brazil and the European Union.
It is this interconnectedness that makes the recent news about Iran firing up its Bushehr Nuclear Plant so poignant. The Iranians have tried to get the Bushehr facility built and running since 1974 when they first contracted with the German company Siemens. The plant was only partially built when it was bombed by Iraq during the their war in the 80's. They've had deals with Spain and Argentina as well as a host of other countries but all of those deals were cancelled due to U.S. pressure. Eventually Russia stepped into the picture to finish building the plant but that was in 1995. In addition to this project taking an almost prohibitively long time to finish, Iran has also had to contend with years of sanctions as well as threats by the Israeli's that Iranian nuclear power plants would be bombed if they ever became operational. Lastly, for years the U.S. policy has been that it is in the best interest of the world to prevent Iran from acquiring any and all nuclear equipment, technologies, and know-how, including those necessary for the peaceful use of nuclear energy in an effort to prevent Iran from having nuclear weapons. But despite the tough talk of the Bush years and the soft diplomacy of the Obama administration, on August 21, 2010 Iran began the process of firing up the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant.
Prior to this event former U.S. envoy to the United Nations John Bolton told the Israeli's and the world via Fox News that if Israel was going to launch an attack on Bushehr, it needed to do it before the 21st, lest they risk radioactive fallout from blowing up a live nuclear reactor. There were indicators that this was a possibility as the Saudi's had given Israel permission to fly over their country in the event they planned to actually attack Iran. But the week passed and there was no assault. No Osirak-like mission was to be had. In fact, not only did Iran begin to bring Bushehr online but also days later they even debuted an unmanned attack drone and announced plans for the mass production of high-speed missile-launching assault boats. So the question is, why didn't the Israeli's make good on a decade of threats and blow the place up? More to the point, what more could the United States have done to prevent this event from occurring? The answers lies in the political-economic structure of the multi-polar world we are now living in.
The first and easiest to understand reason why the Israeli's didn't attack Bushehr is that the US deemed it not to be a proliferation risk. In short, if the rationale for bombing it was to prevent weapons from being made there, then there was no reason to bomb it in the first place. U.S. State Department spokesman Darby Holladay stated that since Russia had agreed to supply nuclear fuel and remove spent fuel rods; there was minimal risk the plant would be used to make nuclear weapons. In addition, if we've learned anything from the recent adventure in Iraq it's that the world has neither little stomach nor patience for preemptive war. Had Israel attacked Bushehr they would have lost the war before the battle had even begun in the court of world opinion, such is the multi-polar world.
When the Israeli's bombed Osirak they didn't bother to even warn the US, and frankly given the world of the early 80's, they didn't have to. The dominoes that fell after they hit Iraq didn't register on the radar of the superpower that was the US. As I stated earlier, the times they have a-changed. With countries scattered across the globe armed with intercontinental ballistic missiles it behooves every serious country to at best, tread lightly. It is one thing when only two countries have nuclear weapons and neither are particularly invested in your best interest and quite another when a number of countries have nuclear weapons and have a vested interest in your survival. Attacking Iran leads to military conflict with China, Russia and at least a third of Latin America, not to mention most of the Middle East as they are all tied together both militarily and financially. Despite some of the crazy rhetoric we hear on cable news and even from the mouths of certain leaders across the world, war isn't something anyone is really interested in and therefore there's only so much any one country can do when another opts to flout international concerns. In a game of carrot and stick, we've buried the stick and hope that lots of carrots work. Of course, in a situation like this once you've run out of carrots and there is no stick to use, you are forced to just live with it and that's a reality for both the US and Israel.
Besides war, both nuclear and conventional, the US also has to contend with the economic realities of the multi-polar world. The US and China are the two biggest economies in the world. China, as of June 2010, holds roughly $843.7 billion in US treasury securities. The U.S. trade deficit with China widened to $26.2 billion in June, the highest since October 2008, as imports from there jumped according to the Commerce Department earlier this month. Now, if either the US or China, for example, opted to do something of a "cowboy-like" nature like bomb Iran or invade Taiwan, the economic repercussions to both countries would be far worse and much faster than anything else besides nuclear oblivion. And you can make this case the world over with the EU, Russia, Latin America, etc. Once Bill Clinton and the Republican congress started us down the free trade path they left the proverbial barn door open and there's no closing it now. We're not going to embargo China or any country that really matters because doing so will only hurt us in the long run. Sure in the short run manufacturing will briefly return but sooner or later markets become saturated and we're right back to where we are now, global interconnected markets. Despite the assertions of boisterous radio personalities, there are in fact limits to growth whether you're global or isolated. Negligible economic progress will probably occur but for the most part, this is indeed the New Normal.
So what more could the Obama Administration have done to prevent Bushehr from coming online? The answer is simply nothing. That answer doesn't change if or when a Republican becomes president. The latest episode with Iran shows us that the US is more or less impotent. We're not alone in that respect because quite frankly so is the rest of the sane, civilized world. Military action isn't a viable option; trade wars, sanctions, embargoes, etc. aren't a viable option either. Essentially a multi-polar world with every country seated at the round table means that for the most part, we're all locked into an eternal state of check, with no checkmate in sight. Mutually Assured Destruction for everybody and nobody. Welcome to the real New World Order.

America is like the Generals, and the International Bankers are like the Harlem Globetrotters. Bouncing the ball off of America's forehead before 360 dunking on our faces for all of eternity.
There is no country only corporations...um, that's fascism.
And so is Globalization.
Hurray for non-military options. This means that Nukes are the only things protecting our borders?
Oh yeah, we ARE holding sanctions on Iran, if you're paying attention.
(BTW, everyone thought a New World Order, get it, the "New World" is America, and with the amount of war it is used too, it won't stop just because the world is 'sane' now. That's never stopped humanity before. Hell, people thought there was going to be a New World Order before WWI, when the whole world was growing due to the industrial revolution. Secret Alliances...which you've spelled out here is the main event for WWIII.
Don't worry the Financial Globetrotters will all be in Switzerland or the Cayman Islands or Tahiti, and hiding in their customized fallout shelters, absconding with our pensions, when the real shit hits the fan.
They'll be running scarred like that slime ball Burke from Aliens. Those cowards.

Meh Who cares, let's fight about Muslims building Mosques some more!!
Just kidding.
Honestly I think I'm fine with this. I remember years of Nuke scares. I remember having to practice hiding under our desks...I even remember getting detention for asking how this was going to help.
However, look at the trillions we have spent on the military. I'm from a family of Army and Navy people(sorry marines and Air force nothing but respect though), and even I cannot justify even a 10th of the waste we have spent.
Just think of the trillions we would have if we stopped spending so much money. Stopped trying to create our special interests...in the guise of policing the world. Stopped paying so much to the UN. Isolationism seems like a better bang for the buck. Heck China is number 2 now.

Wimps.
Iran is going to nuke Israel and all most of you can do is continue to knock your own country...
Isolation? The last time we used that as a foreign policy a World War broke out.
Just be honest with yourselves- you're afraid to get drafted or volunteer to serve so you demonize your own country and blame our wars on your own people.
It's our fault we got attacked on 9/11.
It's our fault Saddam never agreed to the terms of his surrender or that he was a brutal dictator to his own people. He did a great job as a murderer and as a result the region was stabilized (as long as stabilized means ten years of war with Iran then invading Kuwait).
It's all our fault that Iran has stated time and again that they wanted to destroy us and we are the Devil. Let's let them have nukes.
Let's do all of these things and keep acting like babies because we are afraid to actually fight people who have threaten to kill us for decades...

Wimps.
Israel is going to nuke Iran and all most of you can do is refuse to ignore your own country's complicity...
Isolation? The last time we used that as a foreign policy we didn't make money off of it.
Just be honest with yourselves - you're afraid to be as great a citizen as Grant Muioc. You don't succumb to the moronic notion of patriotism and its insistence that you obligate your life to arbitrary borders.
You didn't say it was our fault we got attacked on 9/11, you merely tried to acknowledge that there were reasons - wholly unjustified - for the Saudi terrorists to attack - that's more than I and Glenn Beck are willing to allow, traitor!
It's our fault Saddam never agreed to give himself up to international criminal procedures that we too ignore, or that he was a brutal dictator who we aided and supported until he stopped the money flow into our pockets. He did a great job as a murderer of a section of his country that wanted to secede and as a result the region was stablized (as long as stabilized means ten years of war with Iran which we funded on both sides, then the totally-not-like-the-Israel-situation invasion of Kuwait).
It's our fault that Iran has been intentionally mistranslated time and time again saying they wanted to destory us and we are the Devil. I mean, we just protest over the construction of any of their religious buildings and bomb their people in a convenient PR campaign helping to drive young Muslims to extremism. Let's let them have nukes just like Israel (oops, not supposed to mention that.)
Let's do all these things and keep acting like fear-driven, profit-motivated war-mongers because we are afraid to continue sanctioning and bombing the life out of people who don't take kindly to being dictated to from powers thousands of miles away... That ain't how us 'mericans do it!

lol @ Muioc absolutely shitting himself.
Go Iran!

"Just be honest with yourselves- you're afraid to get drafted or volunteer to serve so you demonize your own country and blame our wars on your own people."
This is Grade A trolling.
When it comes to war I have two opinions. If we are fighting another country and our going to their land to fight, just nuke them instead.
If another country attacks us on our soil, Ill pick up arms and defend my home in a heartbeat.
People like you enjoy preemptive strikes, people like me attack when we have to and only to put an end to things.
In today's society, where people are emotionless and could care less about one another, I dont think wiping a civilization off the map would affect them. Shame you fall into that category.
Im curious to read a list of why Iranian's hate us. See if we cant talk to them about it and figure it out. All I hear is that they hate us because we have what they dont. That doesnt make sense to me. I dont like Paris Hilton (though she does have hot soles) but I could care less what she does with her money.
I feel the only group that hates the world with just cause are the somalian pirates. Ocean dragging has stolen their livelihood and they have no other option. Burying their children who died from starvation because of commercial fishing is a travesty. Not to mention the millions of lbs. of fish wasted whenever dragging yeilds breeds the boat's arnt paid to catch. The waste is stomach churning. Yes it is a shame innocents are taken captive, but at least it brings national attention to the matter.
Put yourself in their shoes and see how you feel. War should be the last course of action and when it comes to war, it needs to be the final solution. Not an 8 year fiasco.
Iran has always had a big mouth but small prick.

Yeah Grant because we should dictate our foreign policy based on a first strike policy.
You talk bad about us we kill you, you don't do what we like we kill you. That your plan? THANK GOD people like you aren't in charge of this country.
There is no difference in your plan and other fascists, let's take over the world regimes that have been seen in history.
BTW the World War would have broken out REGARDLESS of whether we were being isolationists or not.
Oh and one last thing...you want to talk about cowards...aren't you the same guy who said not to long ago that you quit the military because you didn't want to follow any orders given to you by Obama?
Let's be real with yourself before you start calling other people out ok pal?

Grant is Back!!!
Hey Grant remember that time you admitted you were a troll when that 10 year old owned you? (it is in the California Democrat platform comments for those of you that would like to read it)
Anyway, is this another Trolling session? Because no one honestly thinks we could have stopped World War II by getting involved earlier.
You do realize that we actually supported the actions of Bin Laden through use of the CIA during conflicts with Russian, if you do not believe that then you must certainly realize that the son of one of our richest Saudi allies certainly received some of the hundreds of millions of dollars we poured into that area to stop those darn commies. You also realize that this money essentially created the Al-Queda right?,
Saddam Hussein was also seen by the American Military as a great anti communist fighter during the late 60s and early 70s. His rise to power also stabilized Iraq and help bring modernity to the nation and even earning and award from the UN. He was considered a hero to some degree in the region, and his anti communist agenda in opposition of Russian earned him our support. That is why you have the early 80s pic of he and Rumsfeld. We used to like him. We even hailed him as th defender of the arab world. It was not until the 1988 killing debacle that we actually had our doubts about this guy. However, that is not why we dislike him, he borrowed a lot of money from us, and he could not pay it back after the stale mate war with Iran. They borrowed a ton of money from Kuwait, then to pay it off, they artificially inflated the price of oil. Kuwait did not do this, so he basically invaded...after claiming Kuwait was part of Iraq and they had slanted drilling wells.
Reagan loaned Saddam 40 Billion in credit to fight Iran, and became the US's third biggest recipient of aid (between you and me that might have something to do with why Iran is pissed.)that is how the Gulf War happened. (in a real nutshell I only had so much space)
I'm not saying Bin or Saddam are good people, but our military hands are far from clean.
So next time you complain about health care think of the billions we have spent supporting people that we are now spending Trillions to destroy.
Sometimes it is okay to question things.
Unless you are still tolling, in which case, you got me.

I thought that Obama was going to open talks with Iran, after that idiot Bush failed to do so.

Grant,
You are talking about NOT serving in the military? Refresh my memory, but you were too coward to serve under a Democrat so you cut and ran. If you continued to serve, you would have a point. But, you are just another coward that says "do as I say, not as I do!"
By the way, how is 1070 working out for you? :-) Hope and Change for conservatives is doing away with the constitution they supposedly defend. I am glad MUCH smarter people saw the problem with it, and they pretty much stopped your conservative circle jerk.
Way to be an "American."

Grant, you seriously are the most awesome shameless troll I have ever read.

You spoiled wimpy babies should feel blessed that your tax dollars pay for a military more powerful than any in history.
You should get down on your knees and thank God that young men and women volunteer their service to protect and defend your goofy asses from the very people who have attacked you over and over since 9/11.
It's a global war on terrorism that is focused on radical Islam. It's not just the Taliban and Al Qaeda- it's Saddam, the Iranian Ayatollahs, the Saudi funding streams, Somali pirates...even the "US Citizens" that openly use their freedom of speech to call for the destruction of this country...
Instead you call this "blind patriotism" and defend the very people who call for your destruction on a daily basis.
You're scared, weak, stupid and blind of the threats around you- and you shit on those who defended your freedoms.
No class or respect is shown and I refuse to show any in return. Absolute distain.
Anyone who thinks fucking Iran should have nukes is a complete idiot.
Most of you have never known anyone who has served, and those of you who have understand that we could wipe these threats off the planet if not for your constant whining...
I'm not talking about striking civilians or killing babies.
Remember when Iran went into revolt over crooked elections a year and a half ago? How
their own military shot them in the streets and executed twitter users? Destroying their base of
power would free these people...
But nooooo, you're all to chicken shit to consider the fact that wiping out Iran's military capability would be a good thing.
Because we are Americans and were the badguys because white people owned slaves, Indians had their lands taken, Chinese built railroads then were kicked out, Japanese US citizens were put in camps because their native country attacked us, and whatever other bullshit reasons you have to hate your country...
Bush stole the election, invaded Iraq, and killed the economy- so now no matter what liberals get to act stupid and lay in bed with Irans puppet government that has vowed to kill all of us because that's politically correct...
You're all assholes.
Keep dreaming of peace with people who blow each other up for believing in a different Caliph, behead nonbelievers and enslave woman...
Don't liberals go all out for woman's rights, minorities and atheists? Because Muslims enslave or kill those people.
You should be the first people to stand against them- but you're too scared. That's the truth and that's why you all bend over and defend this nonsense and the ONLY reason why we have not squashed this fucking problem on 9/12.
Posted By: Grant Muioc (Guest) on August 26, 2010 at 01:35 AM
Most people won't take me seriously, and most of the time I don't want to be taken seriously...But I will still make a point somewhere that rings true with someone.
It might be you, it might not, but I could care less.
Call me what you want. Agree with me or not. I'm just responding to what these writers put out there. If I go too far I usually recognize it and walk myself back, mostly out of respect to something that someone written.
I admit my mistakes and correct them.
Unlike President Obama...
Now can we get back to the subject at hand- which is California and why it's all messed up? or not...
Posted By: Grant Muioc (Guest) on August 12, 2010 at 06:12 PM
Yeah this is where Grant does admit that he is a troll and that we should not take him seriously. I think we should follow his advice. Especially after his last rant.
Posted By: Abdomen (Guest) on August 26, 2010 at 09:03 AM
Grant your such a tool...SUCH a tool.
Saddam was NOT radical Islam. You haven't the slightest idea what in the hell you are talking about (which isn't much of a surprise to be honest).
Saddam was a dictator wanting to keep power, he could care less about "Islam".
Still haven't heard you defend you own wimpy ass leaving the military and going against your own vow to follow the commander in chief (apparently in your world it's only if you voted for him)
And the fact remains that YOU would like america to be like the cowboys of old and just run ruffshot over the entire planet doing whatever we see fit to whomever we want. That is a GREAT way to foster international relationships you twit, but I guess they don't teach you much in the way of diplomatic relations in basic training huh?
BTW you want us to stand against "them". Based on your past statements you want everyone to stand against all of Islam so you want to make this another crusade. Good job that will work out great, keep living in this world where American can just do whatever it wants to anyone and somehow that is going to make things better.
Yes only the immortal Grant is man enough to stand up for AMERICA...only Grant is capable enough of ridding the world of extremists. Grant should run for office, Grant should publish a newsletter (I would subscribe!).
The fact is Grant is a scared little man or maybe a scared little troll - hard to tell. For such a gung how macho American guy....wonder why you aren't a lifer in the military?

It’s always funny to me how you people start fighting each other over the dumbest of things. It’s no wonder America is so despised everywhere else; because you people can’t even tolerate yourselves. You make ridiculous racial slurs about Islam, a religion none of you understand I might add, and then cling to outdated ideologies based on your knowledge of World War II. The world has changed and America’s influence is no longer as great as it is and instead of learning to deal with it you arrogant fools are coming up with petty ways to cling to your former power. All you rednecks can do is blame one political party for your country’s problems?? Here’s a funny fact; your country’s problems were caused by both Republicans and Democrats equally throughout the years. So maybe you should stop trying to blame the other and actually work on some problems. Or go back to blaming Islam for everything. It’s no wonder your country is on the decline much like Ancient Rome.
