Romney Wins In New Hampshire, Can Wrap Things Up In SC
Posted by Ashish on 01.10.2012
Analysis of the state of the GOP race following Romney's New Hampshire win...
Main takeaways from Romney's solid, though not spectacular, New Hampshire win:
* The nomination is now Romney's to lose. If he wins in South Carolina, it's over.
* The Bain attacks may backfire. We don't have a lot to go off of in terms of the New Hampshire results since it's a much different state than South Carolina and Romney is so strong in New Hampshire, but Newt Gingrich seems to be getting more flack from Rush Limbaugh and FOX News than gaining support from these attacks. Romney won late deciders tonight, a sign that the last two days of attacks against him had no impact. The Bain attacks inherently anti-Republican. You can't say you're for free markets and anti-regulation, then say venture capital firms like Bain can't lay people off. It's a hypocritical argument and has the potential to rally to Romney the exact types of conservatives that so far have been so lukewarm towards him.
* The Bain attacks would be better served in a general election, where that type of portrayal would find sympethetic ears among Democrats and Independents. The Obama campaign will definitely portray Romney as the exact Wall Street CEO type who has been in the news, cashing in on millions in bonuses at the expense of employees. But in a Republican primary, doesn't make a lot of sense.
* Jon Huntsman's performance turned out to be fairly disappointing. He'll stay in, but he'll get demolished in South Carolina.
* Rick Santorum's Iowa momentum is now basically gone and I don't expect him to be much of a factor going forward.
* Turnout was down. About 220,000 people voted in New Hampshire tonight, compared to 240,000 in the 2008 Republican primary. Again, turnout in Iowa and New Hampshire have not indicated much enthusiasm or excitement among GOP voters, a bad sign going into the general election.
As we go into South Carolina, Romney is in prime position to win the state and wrap up the nomination because none of his rivals have any momentum. Gingrich and Santorum, the two guys who you would think would be strong in a state like South Carolina, actually appear to be losing momentum while eating into each other's votes. Gingrich is launching what amounts to a suicide attack in GOP primary -- attacking the nature of free enterprise, those attacks, even if they do hurt Romney, won't help Gingrich. Santorum is sinking, leaving the tiniest window open for someone like Perry to capitalize on the blowback from the Gingrich/Romney shootout. But given Perry's current standing, that is a scenario with very little chance of actually happening.
In other words, Romney has this thing just about wrapped up. Things will get very dirty in South Carolina, no doubt about it, and he will have to take some punches, but the only person who can beat Romney now is himself. It will take a major fumble on his part to lose the nomination.

Ron Paul will fight until the bitter end, SC is not the end, not even the beginning of the end for us.

Its amazing how the media tries to completely ignore Paul. Im no conspiracy nut, but literally 85% of the people I know from young to old say Paul is who they would vote for out of all of them and then way more then half would pick him over Obama.
Something fishy is going on. I think he is not one of the powers that be's puppets. That just means if he by some chance ever did get nominated and god forbid win, he would be eliminated one way or another.
Looks like another dead end for Paul, so this will be the second election i "opt out of".
These are just my opinions on what I feel is a serious matter, please dont ridicule me for them.

Romney could have won by 30 points and Ashish would find a way to spin it as good for Obama

Ron Paul is ignored by the media because he's regarded as nuts. If you type "Ron Paul c" into Google search in your Firefox browser, "ron paul crazy" and "ron paul crazy quotes" are the second and fourth options respectively.

You aren't a conspiracy nut but you talk about NOTHING BUT conspiracy theories. He would be eliminated? He is not a "power's that be puppet"...get the tin foil hat off your head would ya please?
BTW 90% of the people I know can't stand the guy and wouldn't vote for him if he was up against bugs bunny for president....what is your point?

Here's an alternative explanation: The people you know are not a representative sample of the Republican base voting in the caucuses. I don't particularly know a lot of people who listen to Justin Bieber or buy those stupid Twillight books, but the share statistical evidence suggests that either a lot of people are lying to me about their reading habits or I just hang around with a different crowd...

SIf you haven't realized that Ron Paul is a legitimate contender yet, you're an idiot. To the haters, your opinions about libertarian philosophy are cute and all but unless you have some sound criticism of the "Plan to Restore America" itself? You're talking out of your associated.

You can argue all you want about opinions related to conspiracies, but you can't argue with facts.
The fact is, this is an almost 500 word summary on last night's primary, and it has comments relating to the candidates who finished 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th. I wonder who finished 2nd? I'd never know from reading this article.

Ron Paul's positions stand to cost certain people a lot of money: military contractors, pharmaceutical companies, privatized prisons, the DEA/ATF, and everyone raping money from the Federal Reserve.
I can understand why some liberal voters wouldn't support Paul due to his hands-off approach in regard to corporations. However, I'm a evil atheist and I would gladly vote for the man.
Conservatives? It seems to me if they REALLY believe the things they spout about reducing spending and keeping the government out of our lives would be highly supportive of Ron Paul.
The problem IMO is that they DONT believe in reducing military spending and they DONT believe in keeping the government out of our private lives.

Paul's not playing to win. Notice he hardly ever goes after Romney (and vice versa)? He's going to stick around until the end just to ensure that his ideas get a bigger platform, and also to help his son, who will probably run in 2016 with the same ideas.
