In Less Than Two Months Cindy Sheehan May Be Dead
Posted by Joshua White on 07.05.2006

From what I could tell, it didn't make it into the national media in the way that she would have liked, but Cindy Sheehan is once again making news. Apparently, she is still pissy about the war in Iraq and in an attempt to stop the war she, along with a few other activists are going on a hunger strike in order to protest. Yes, my followers, she is officially crazy.

In case you are new to the political scene Cindy Sheehan is anti-war activist. She started campaigning against the war after her son, Casey Sheehan, died in early 2004 while fighting in Sadr City. Since then, Cindy has been a part of a bunch of stunts, including holding a summer-long protest outside of President Bush's ranch in Crawford Texas. It seems that none of these little exploit haven't had the effect that she has desired (personally, I'd say they've had no effect whatsoever, besides making her look insane). So, to show that she is still serious about the US getting out of Iraq, she has stepped up her insanity another notch.

Here's what happened: Code Pink, a woman's anti-war group, organized an anti-war protest outside the White House yesterday. There were a staggering 150 people in attendance. This was truly a force to be reckoned with. And they weren't there to just protest. Oh no! They asked all those in attendance to fast…for a day!!! (As a side note: this is not a big deal. I don't know if any of you readers have ever fasted for a day, but it isn't that bad. I mean, yeah, you get hungry and thirsty but it is very doable.) And the kicker, as I mentioned above, is that Cindy Sheehan and a few others have decided to fast for longer than a measly day. Cindy has decided to go on a fast for the rest of the summer. All that she'll be ingesting is water. It seems that she'll start eating when one of two things happens: the summer ends, or the war does.

I don't want to sound pessimistic dear readers, but the war will not end by the end of the summer. There is not a chance of it. So, it looks as if Cindy is going to be a hungry girl fairly soon. And depending on when she considers the end of summer to be, she might not survive this pointless little battle of wills. The human body can go quite a while with no food. Since Cindy is not rail thin, she might be able to last 6 weeks or so. But if she is still alive towards the end of August she will have done possibly irreparable damage to more than one internal organ. Worse she could die.

The worst part of all of this is that it is really for nothing. Nobody in the Bush administration cares about the antics of Cindy Sheehan. She has proven herself as someone who will not listen to reason and only cares about her one thing: getting the troops out of Iraq.

But there are more reasons why the Bush administration shouldn't listen to Cindy. The first being that the vast majority of Americans do not want what Cindy is asking for. Cindy and her cronies of crazies want the troops to be brought home tomorrow. Hell, bring 'em home right now. That is a terrible idea. She doesn't want us to finish in Iraq. She doesn't even want us to fix up a few things before we go. As far as she is concerned, we should just get out now. Why? Because "this war is a crime." This is not what the American public wants. Sure, more than not want our troops out. But very few want them out tomorrow. Those who want the troops out of Iraq want a timetable. That is certainly reasonable. This is not what Cindy is asking for.

Let me briefly explain why this is a ridiculously bad idea. Ok, whether or not you're for the war, for a moment let's just assume that the war was done for the wrong reasons, and that we shouldn't have gone. Everyone with me? Here is the problem. Even if we did go there because of "Bush's lies" and even if we ultimately shouldn't have gone at all, that is not a good reason to leave now. I repeat that even if we are losing troops daily, even if we are spending tons of money, and yes, even if we are there wrongly…we should still stay!

We have gone in there, killed innocent people, destroyed buildings, and in some places generally messed everything up. Don't you think that it would only be proper, moral, nice, or whatever term you want to put here for us to stay and help to make things better? Whether or not we went for the right reasons we're there now and we need to remember this. Yes, more of our soldiers will die in the mean time. So will civilians. But the overall outcome will be better. And I'm curious if Cindy really cares at all for the civilians of Iraq. If we left now life would not be better for them. Take either the talking points from the left or the right and my conclusion seems right. Left: Iraq is on the brink of civil war. Right: the terrorists will just wait until we leave to resume their violence. Either way, Iraq as a country needs support right now. If we are only going to think about our people and their lives, then I would ask her why our people are more important than those of another country. I would want to know if people, or countries, should make amends for their past mistakes. If so, how would we be making these amends if we just left these people when they needed us (especially since we put them into that situation because of us)?

So, not only is Cindy not talking for the majority (or even vast minority) of the population, but she hasn't really thought out what her desires would amount to. There is one more concern I have concerning Cindy. For the most part her desires are ill-conceived but not terribly dangerous or illegal. But recently she said something that makes me start to question her actions as legal. She said, "We represent millions of Americans who withdraw their support from this government." This, to me, seems really close to either treason or sedition. She has to be careful. Is she saying that she is totally withdrawing her support from the government? And if you add to that that she has been chummy with Hugo Chavez (whom this country considers a potential enemy) then we could have a serious offense here. I'm not trying to be like Michael Savage. He wants to convict everyone of sedition. But this quote really can lead one to believe the wrong things. Whether or not she means what it sounds like, she needs to be careful.

Cindy is crazy. She has had to deal with one of the hardest possible losses that a mother could face. I would fall apart if my daughter were to die. The thought alone, as I'm typing this, is making me sad. But Cindy has taken her craziness to the streets. And she is starting to say some potentially dangerous things (if they are taken as I did). We're in Iraq, Cindy. We're staying. American wants us to stay for a while at least. Stop the fast. Eat a burger. Chill out.
