James Dobson May Vote For Hilary Clinton
Posted by Joshua White on 01.17.2007
I have proof that there is a chance that Dobson will vote for Hilary. Read on.
It has only been three weeks since my column on James Dobson and why he's silly. I thought that I would be done with him. Honestly, I thought that my complete rejection of his views would have pretty much shut down Focus on the Family. I expected a wave of rejection to sweep not only the net, but the nation. Chants of "Josh was right! Josh was right!" were to be heard. But none of this happened. And once again Jimmy Dobs has opened his mouth and said something ridiculous. (Further, this time he can't possibly mean it.)
This past Thursday, Dobson was on the Jerry Johnson radio show. (Never heard of it? Neither have I.) While be interview Dobson, Johnson said the following:
"Dr. Dobson, let's move quickly to 2008. I know [that] pro-family conservatives are thinking about the next cycle of leadership and you've mentioned something earlier about the president and traditional marriage, vis a vis homosexual marriage. And, uh, a lot of people are saying..."Well, it's going to be Giuliani or McCain. They're polling at the top right now." I wanna play a John McCain sound byte and I'd like for you to react to this."
He then plays a clip of McCain where he says, "I think that gay marriage should be allowed, if there's a ceremony kind of thing, if you want to call it that. I don't have any problem with that."
Johnson then follows this up by asking Dobson if he would be comfortable with McCain as the Republican candidate for president. Dobson replied that he "would not vote for John McCain under any circumstances." He continues on by saying that McCain "is not in favor of traditional marriage and I pray that we don't get stuck with him."
As a fan of big words, let me tell all of you something. Them's is big words! And I'll come back in a bit and talk more about them.
When I first heard this I was a little confused. I knew that McCain was a "moderate Republican" but I was pretty sure that he was against gay marriage. So I did something that it seems that neither Johnson nor Dobson did: research. It took me three seconds on McCain's to find his speech to the president on this issue. So what does McCain have to say about marriage between the gays?
First thing he says: Mr. President, I believe that the institution of marriage can serve its public purposes only when it is understood as being a union between one man and one woman.
Other notable lines:
"Most Americans believe, as do I, that the institution of marriage should be reserved for the union of a man and a woman." (my emphasis)
"Proponents of an amendment [to ban gay marriage] to my state's constitution, which I support, are working hard to collect the required number of signatures to secure a place on the November ballot. If we succeed, I am certain Arizonans will adopt it overwhelmingly."
"There can be little doubt that a sizeable majority of the American people, whatever their views on other questions involving the rights of homosexuals in our society, strongly support reserving the institution of marriage for the union of one man and one woman. That majority includes, I am confident, majorities in every state in the union. It includes Americans of both political parties, whose voting habits and general political philosophy range from conservative to moderate to liberal."
Does any of this sound like someone who is "opposed to traditional marriage"? Hell, McCain even claimed that what happened in Massachusetts "can be fairly criticized as judicial activism that ignored the will of the people and denied a state government its long established right to regulate marriage." As far as I can tell, McCain is using all the same words that any proud conservative would use.
So, what's wrong? Well, McCain understands that this country has 50 states and they tend to like to make their own individual laws. McCain doesn't support gay marriage, but at the same time he didn't want to pass a constitutional amendment. Traitor to the heterosexual race!!
Because McCain will not blindly go along with every crazy right-winger he's clearly opposed to traditional marriage. But the best part? The quote that Johnson quoted was taken completely out of context. (What? A talk-show host taking something out of context? Say it ain't so!)
McCain was quoted from an interview he gave to Chris Matthews on Hardball. Below is the entire quote with Matthews' questions:
MATTHEWS: But in so many cases in the last president election—the gay marriage issue was used effectively to rally the Christian conservatives to the polls, and it helped bring about the majorities in states like Ohio. You're saying that your party has never taken a position adversarial to gay marriage and issues like that?
MCCAIN: On the issue of gay marriage, I do believe, and I think it's a correct policy that the sanctity of heterosexual marriage, a marriage between man and woman, should have a unique status. But I'm not for depriving any other group of Americans from having rights. But I do believe that there is something that is unique between marriage between a man and a woman, and I believe it should be protected.
MATTHEWS: Should there be—should gay marriage be allowed?
MCCAIN: I think that gay marriage should be allowed, if there's a ceremony kind of thing, if you want to call it that. I don't have any problem with that, but I do believe in preserving the sanctity of a union between man and woman.
Now I will say that the amount of Kerryesque flip-flopping in this particular portion of the interview is pretty spectacular. But I think that if you knew what John McCain actually said in his prepared speech it is clear that what he is trying to say is that the sanctity of marriage is something special. However, some sort of "ceremony" can be offered to those gays who'd like to be formally committed to one another.
But Dobson isn't interested in logical and complex reasoning. What he is interested in is using "big words." And because of this love of using "big words" I have a favor to ask of all of you. Anyone who is even moderately Republican...I ask you to please vote for John McCain in the primaries. We, as Americans (and haters of James "Dobby D" Dobson) need to get McCain to be the Republican nomination.
Why?
Because, as everyone knows Hilary Clinton will win the Democratic nomination. I will then have two words for Dobson: "Now what?" Dobson uses them "big words" and says that he'll "under no circumstances" would vote for McCain. Well, I want to know who he'll vote for when his options are the radically left-winged, universal health care advocating, it takes a village to raise child believing wack job or a Republican who agrees more with you than not!
As I'm wrapping this column up I've begun to realize that I have committed the same error that Dobson did. I claim that Dobson used a quote out of context and that he didn't use the principle of charity with him. Maybe I'm not being charitable with Dobson. I'll admit to this. But while McCain could be seen as simply being tripped up on this words, especially when you read his other speeches on the issue, Dobson has said nothing that competes with this view. Maybe I'm not being as charitable as I should be...but people, it's James Dobson!! It's so hard to give him any sort of credibility.
Followers, I will try hard to write about other subjects other than James Dobson and his insane friends in future columns. However, I cannot promise this as something crazy is just bound to jump out of his sinless mouth.
Before I finish I would like to ask a poll question of sorts. I was thinking about the names of our current and past presidents. No disrepsect to President Bush, but I just don't think that "George Bush" is the most "Commander in Cheif" sounding name. So here is the question:
Disregarding politics entirely who do you think has the most presidential sounding name of the last 40 years? (I want to smart small. That is why we're only looking at the last eight presidents.)
Send me an email and let me know what you think. If the winner is a president or ex-president that is still alive, I'll personally send this man an email letting him know how presidential his name sounds.*
