Palin Could Hurt McCain With Jewish Community
Posted by Ashish on 08.30.2008

News is now out about McCain VP Sarah Palin supporting Pat Buchanan for much of the 90s, including his 2000 Presidential run, a time when he was pretty openly anti-Semitic. Buchanan himself has confirmed that she was an engaged supporter of his, even showing up to fundraisers. The Anti-Defamation League has their own page on Pat Buchanan which says Buchanan has "racist, anti-Semitic, anti-Israel and anti-immigrant views." Buchanan is strongly disliked in Jewish communities and news that Palin supported him in a pretty public way could play a big role in states like Florida and Ohio which have very large Jewish populations.

Wasting no time, Democrats are jumping all over this. Here is what Rep. Robert Wexler of Florida said today.
John McCain's decision to select a vice presidential running mate that endorsed Pat Buchanan for President in 2000 is a direct affront to all Jewish Americans. Pat Buchanan is a Nazi sympathizer with a uniquely atrocious record on Israel, even going as far as to denounce bringing former Nazi soldiers to justice and praising Adolf Hilter for his "great courage."

At a time when standing up for Israel's right to self-defense has never been more critical, John McCain has failed his first test of leadership and judgment by selecting a running mate who has aligned herself with a leading anti-Israel voice in American politics. It is frightening that John McCain would select someone one heartbeat away from the presidency who supported a man who embodies vitriolic anti-Israel sentiments.
This, combined with the scandal Palin is caught up in right now in Alaska, really makes you question what kind of vetting process, if any, the McCain camp put Palin through.

But this story, Palin being linked to an extremist like Buchanan, has other links. It further paints a picture of Palin as very much a rightwing extremist. She is against abortion in EVERY scenario including rape and incest, a position over 90% of America disagrees with. She wants to teach creationism in school science classes, which is one of the more extreme religious positions one can take. And she is as pro-big oil as you can get.

The thing that makes Palin tricky is that she (and Republicans) are now going to try and pander to Hillary Clinton supporters and try their best to not say anything about who Palin is or what she supports. Palin was picked, largely, for her gender. I'm not criticizing that, I'm stating the obvious. If there was no Hillary Clinton factor in this election, Palin would never have even been considered for VP by McCain or any other Republican. Nobody can say Sarah Palin is ready to be President. It doesn't matter if you also think Obama isn't ready. You can say both aren't ready, but you can't seriously argue that Palin is ready and Obama isn't. Her convention speech will likely praise Clinton and attempt to make herself seem like a champion for women even though she is vocally against choice which is constantly polled as one of the most important issues to women. This is definitely a gamble pick, a hail mary even. But politically, it's smart. I don't know if it will work, but at this point, McCain had to try something. Picking Romney or Pawlenty wouldn't have changed anything.

The risk with Palin, though (besides making McCain's age and health an even bigger issue), is that once the initial buzz of McCain picking a woman fades, as it will in a week or two, she will then have to go out on the stump and actually talk. She will have to answer media questions. And the chances of her saying or doing something negative are extremely high. Not to mention the risk McCain is taking by taking the experience card off the table. It doesn't matter if Palin is a VP candidate and Obama is a Presidential candidate. What matters is how the media, and by extension the country, views it. And much of the media specifically mentioned today how McCain could no longer use the "Obama is inexperienced" line and expect to get any traction.

We will also now see if the scandal Palin is currently in now begins to get national media coverage. Since it is ongoing, and will have new developments throughout this election, the obvious answer there is yes. Again, the specifics of the case don't matter. It's perception. And the media covering a Palin "scandal" is not something McCain wants.

One positive about the Palin pick that some have missed is what this will do to the enthusiasm for the McCain/Palin ticket. McCain supporters had virtually no enthusiasm, compared to Obama supporters who were mostly very excited about him. That has a HUGE impact on who turns out to vote on election day. Putting Palin on the ticket may excite Republicans, including younger evangelical Christians who did a lot for Bush in 2004. On that front, it's a strong pick because none of the other rumored VP picks would have done a thing to try and close the enthusiasm gap.

Nobody really knows how this will play out now. What we do now, though, is that this is definitely something that got attention and got people talking about John McCain, and in the short run, that's a positive for his campaign. In that way, it's similar to the celebrity ads. In the short run, it got attention and got McCain in the news. But at some point, McCain will have to do more than toss out attention-grabbing gimmicks if he wants to win this race.

This is great news for McCain! The 2000 election proved that elderly jewish voters in Florida LOVE Pat Buchanan.

Ashish ... sounds like you are running scared there ... hurry, quick, scurry ... find all the negatives on Sarah Palin. Typical tactics. She sounds like a great woman and somebody that will be an excellent leader. Get a life!

I agree, great points. But what exactly is the "scandal" that Palin is going thru in Alaska? Does it have anything to do with big oil profits?

Trying to connect her with anti semitism is like trying to connect Obama with radical muslims. Why would you stoop to this garbage?

"But at some point, McCain will have to do more than toss out attention-grabbing gimmicks if he wants to win this race."

Unfortunately, the only way he can stay IN the race is to pull moves like this. He is damned either way.

This thing is over. It was over a long time ago. As a grandson of Holocaust survivors, I'm very troubled by this news about her backing Buchanan. My grandparents are not fans of Obama or McCain and may not vote for president at all but I believe they would be scared shitless with a possible (and I do stress possible) anti semite as a csndidate for vice president. This is very worrisome and it's the reason David Duke lost every race he ever ran. I'm not a practicing Jew (I'm a Nichiren Buddhist actually), but I feel that we must protect Israel at all costs.

If they start exploiting this it will give McCain the chance to start bringing up Jeremiah Wright, Louis Farakhan, Ayers, etc.

How EXACTLY is trying to connect someone who was a big supporter of Pat Buchanan--whose policies are nearly all racist or discriminatory, as well as often anti-Semitic--like trying to connect Obama, who was born and raised a Christian and met his Muslim father perhaps twice with radical Islam? And do you think for some reason that Jews are NOT going to be turned off by her support for Buchanan? 'Cause I am a Jew, I can lay some knowledge on ya. Jews, especially Jews for whom Israel is important, do support McCain because of the perception that he will be stronger for Israel. Probably will be, too. But Jews fucking HATE Buchanan. I mean, a lot. And with excellent reason.

Shame on you Wexler. But perhaps you have none. Pat Buchanan is an American patriot. And while you or others may not agree with his traditionalist, America First views, it really is pathetic and low to stoop to disingenuous ad-hominem attacks. Your demagoguery is exactly the reason why people are so turned off by politics and politicians.

Linking Obama to radical Islam is a stretch but linking him to Jeremiah "God Damn America" Wright is not if this is in play. I don't expect 411 to be a unbias source for political news but you would think Obama parted the Red Sea by reading the columnist here..

There's troubling links to questionable people on both sides. This is gonna be a shit flinging presidential race.

Huh, Palin Could Hurt McCain With Jewish Community? She's a disaster. Palin has no record of support for Israel and has worked for Pat Buchannan. There is no way American Jews are going to take a chance that an American President would have to undergo OJT to understand Middle East Issues.

Of course the vetting process wasn't the most intense, they were simply looking for a vagina. Though they may attract a few apolitical morons, I don't think that many of the women who supported Hillary are going to switch vaginas considering the new ones views on abortion.

As the new Republican veep, the media is going to be going through a crazy fact-finding mission on her because, let's face it, no one knows who she is. "Governor of Alaska? For HOW long? Why in the HELL should I vote for her?" There needs to be more than "oh, she's a woman." This stinks of nothing but desperation on McCain's part. She's not experienced, she's wrapped up in scandals and with scandalous people, and her views are extremist enough to shift people's votes...let's just wait until she opens her mouth though before we completely damn her. Maybe McCain just wants her as arm candy.

Regardless, there were MUCH better picks out there...this will spike through the convention, and after that, it'll cool back down, especially after she speaks. Just...bad, bad, bad decision.

(Although great, great, great decision for us Dems)

That, the fact that she's against Gay Marriage, Abortion, Animal Conservation (the woman wants to be able to shoot wolves and bears from air vehicles!) is enough to discredit this crazy, psycho ultra right wing conservative as it is... but now she's an anti-semite? LOL!

Like I tried to say, Buchanan is not a racist, he wants our country to adhere to our immigration laws! He's not anti-immigrant, he's anti-illegal immigrant. Spin it all you want liberals, but if that's racist, the majority of this country is racist.

Is this your first election young man? The Republicans will be doing this and MUCH worse in the next few months. Also, note the McCain/Palin banner ad to your left. Yeah Ashish is biased, biased towards money maybe!

Well if they link Obama to Rev wright Again, then McCain will be linked to pastor John hagee and pastor Rod Parsley as both of them are Trouble to his campaign and it is fair game.

To my knowledge, heavy Jewish populations only tip the scales in blue states. That being said, Her support of Buchanan is likely based on his political positions and has nothing to do with anti-semitism. Do you think that Obama should be looked down upon because he has sympathies to Malcolm X, William Ayers and other so called "radicals"? Does it imply that he advocates acts of terrorism and thinks God should damn America? Its an ad hominem attack and it doesn't make sense in either case. I feel like 411 is becoming irrational in its shilling for Obama, I have the Huffington Post for that.

87% of Jews vote democrat historically, so this is a non-issue. Except for the possibility of convincing the other 13% to vote for Obama, which could make the difference in this tight race in 2008. In general, Palin is one heartbeat away from being President, and she is in no way ready for that. And, with McCain being 72 and only "somewhat" good health, that should scare the crap out of anyone voting for the Republican ticket. Obama might not be the best candidate, but I feel much more comfortable having Biden on deck than Palin. Go Democrats 2008!!

Funny, as all the Jews I know, my g/f included, refuse to solidly get behind Obama because they are skeptical of his commitment to Israel.

I am looking forward to the Palin/Biden debate though. If she prepares well and has a no-nonsense, Margaret Thatcher approach to it -- McCain may just seal the election.

"Linking Obama to radical Islam is a stretch but linking him to Jeremiah "God Damn America" Wright is not if this is in play."

I don't think you get it. Obama has all ready had to go through the shit with Wright and had the media and the opposition beating him over the head with it for months... thats WHY this Buchanan connection deserves attention. Turn about is fair play.

Its one thing to listen to a fiery black preacher that occassionally sais something stupid. Its another to support a guy for president of the United States who literally hates certain segments of its population.

Amazing how much more criticism Palin has received in two days as VICE Presidential pick than you've given Obama in 18 MONTHS of his PRESIDENTIAL bid. Palin has more executive experience than Obama. That's the truth, and the bottom line. Frankly, your whole evident bias is nauseating. Neither McCain nor Obama is worth a pinch of monkey shit, yet you act like this cockbite parted the Red Sea and cured AIDS. I also doubt this comment will ever see the light of day, since you seem to censor everything negative about Osa...I mean, Obama.

Awesome video of Sarah Palin, at the 2:50 mark she point blank says she doesn't even know what the VP does and needs someone to answer that for her.

A few emerging facts on Sarah Palin---

1. John McCain literally selected her after meeting her TWICE in his entire life.

2. She wears glasses to "make her look smarter"....ASK her about her eyeglass prescription--she has none.

3. She preaches ABSTINENCE for our kids, and yet her own teenaged daughter--(you know, the one that was conspicuously absent from the stage yesterday) IS PREGNANT!!! (Think she better worry about being a better mother and leader in her family before she takes on ours)....

3. If your daughter is God Forbid ever a victim of RAPE or INCEST, Sarah would refuse her the right to an abortion.

4. She has 5 SMALL children, including a 5 month old BABY with Downs Syndrome. Excuse me, but I don't know any Republicans with strong family values that would agree with a mom putting her 5 kids on the back burner to chase a political career, DO YOU??????

6. She has NO earthly idea what the "VP" even does day to day!!

ANY MORE QUESTIONS????????

Christ, this is embarassing. I mean it's not like McCain was ever going to win this election but at the very least he could have gone out with some fucking DIGNITY instead of resorting to insipid attack ads and pathetic Clinton-pandering.

I do like that he's such a personification of ridiculous right-wing values, though. Now whenever someone asks me what I don't like about Republicans, I don't have to make a list. I can just point at McCain and Palin and say "Pretty much that."

I don't consider Pat Buchanan an anti-Semite. His views on Israel and Palestine are totally balanced and fair. I hate how just because you support the idea of a sovereign Palestinian nation you are automatically considered an anti-Semite.

Posted By: Guest#7856 (Guest)  on August 30, 2008 at 10:05 PM

Obama was an avid supporter of the late ABC news anchor Peter Jennings, so does that mean he's also an anti-Semite? After all, Jennings did MANY reports about the struggle for the Palestenian people in their conflict against Israel.

The bias around here is staggering. That's why I just stuck to the movies section.

Palin supported Steve Forbes not Pat Buchanan. Wexler is a liar

Posted By: Scott (Guest)  on September 01, 2008 at 03:41 PM

A bizarre article. It is an outright false smear to call Buchanan and 'open anti-semite'. It's true, Buchanan does not reflexively support Israel or unlimited illegal immigration. He does support a foreign policy of less military intervention in the middle east and on russia's borders. You may disagree with this, you may even believe that buchanan is secretly a 200 lb. Anti-semitic reptile in a human suit. Simply BELIEVING such does not make it true.
At any rate, I am a lifelong republican who looves Palin. She's suspect because she supported an American patriot for prez a decade ago? How is it that unbending devotion to a particular foreign country is now a prerequisite for AMERICAN political office? And do any of you actually believe Palin will be rocking a keffiyah at the debates? Really??
Did it cross anyone's mind that this pick WILL produce support from the conservative base (ie. White christian middle and working class males) who loathe mccain? Think we care about Israel any more than Guam? That's tens of millions of backwards reactionaries like me vs the MAYBE 1 percent of the jews who'd conceivably vote republican. Do the math.
