Your Tax Dollars at Work – 2007 Set New Record for Marijuana Busts
Posted by Enrique on 09.21.2008

According to FBI figures released last week, 2007 was a terrific year for the War on Drugs (unlike the Wars on Terror and Poverty, which showed mixed results). Last year, police arrested over 1.8 million people for "drug abuse violations," of which 17.5% were for dealing. That means approximately 1.5 million Americans were detained for simple possession of a product they chose to buy. Of those, over 872,000 were busted for pot, the least offensive illicit intoxicant in history.

It's safe to say that past/current marijuana use is completely ordinary in present day America. Most adults have tried smoking dope at one point in their lives, many people use pot casually, and yet no one lives in fear of crazed stoners pillaging the suburbs or murdering elderly invalids for thrills. Gov. Sarah Palin and Sen. Barack Obama have admitted to past drug use, which hasn't appeared to hurt their otherwise sterling credentials in the minds of the voting public. There isn't any massive outcry for the government at all levels to crack down on the dimebag stashed in some girl's purse. Nonetheless, more Americans were arrested for holding dope in 2007 than any other year in history.

It's not as if people who smoke pot are a danger to society. The only obvious negative effect marijuana has on users is it makes them dreadfully boring. Yet disproportionate law enforcement resources are applied to rounding up these typically non-violent Americans. All of these measures have done nothing to noticeably reduce the market for marijuana. Putting it mildly, arresting people for weed is an imprudent use of taxpayer money.

Government will face a number of significant challenges in the next years. At the local level, catastrophic public employee pension costs are looming on the horizon. At the federal level, entitlement expenses continue to grow, corporate bailouts are suddenly de rigueur, and both presidential candidates propose to expand the war in Afghanistan-Pakistan.

With all this mounting debt, perhaps government could save money by decriminalizing/ignoring drug use. Decriminalization would almost certainly reduce crime across the board, because it would eliminate the black market for drugs, and thus the violence that comes with it. And as a bonus, police wouldn't be hassling non-violent Americans and giving them criminal records for inconsequential offenses. The War on Drugs is a quagmire, and in this case the most sensible way to end the war is to lose it.

Dear God. I know that we conservatives and progressives don't agree on much here at 411, but is anyone actually going to make a case that busting potheads is the best use of our time and money?

Enrique is absolutely right. Let's legalize pot, tax the shit out of it, and combine those proceeds with the money that WOULDN'T be going towards a futile "war" on vile pot smokers and watch that federal deficit shrink a little bit.

A side note: For the most part, I was happy with Bill Clinton's turn in the White House. However, I almost threw a brick through my TV when he gave an interview saying he thought marijuana should be legalized.

Great, Bill. Too bad you were never in a position of power to get that process started. Oh, WAIT...

I usually disagree with you, but I think your spot on here. We could spend this money in a smarter way. I've never had the urge to drink, smoke, or do drugs. It just appears to me that we could make weed a lesser crime or just legalize it as well as prostitution. You would have to have some regulations. We could tax the hell out of them and use that money for the for bridges, roads, healthcare, secondary education, etc. Who am I kidding? This country is too puritanical!

Spoken like a true pothead who only cares about himself and no one else.

Legalizing drug use is a slippery slope that will lead others to begin asking why other illegal activities are not legalized. I don't want drug addicts roaming the streets in record numbers because they have more access to it.

What needs to be done is to embarrass drug users. Most drug use is done because the user thinks it is cool. If they were to be made to feel even more like a loser, they would stop using.

I actually only smoked pot once in my life. It tore up my throat and only enhanced the affect the the booze I was drinking, so I figured if I ever wanted to feel that way again, I'd just drink more booze.

And Michael, "making them feel like losers"? After all the money spent trying to curb marijuana use, all the man hours that could have gone towards stopping violent crime, we're going to try a tactic that works on the 5th grade playground?

Frankly I think that people who watch marathons of "I Love New York 3" are bigger losers than potheads. Anyway we can use government funds to stop THAT trend?

Legalize it!

Then roll-it, stuff it, pack it, bake it and above all, pass it over here.

Michael, your comments just REEKS of a man who has never smoked pot, and really took everything DARE told you to heart.

The fact is marijuana is harmless to you. Really, it is. And judging it from a money perspective, the taxes levied on it would bring in ridiculous amounts of revenue and it would cut costs to law enforcement, giving us some much needed cashflow in the face of the corporate bailouts.

Make it legal, put an age on it (18 or 21, whatever), and watch the money pour in. Oh, and Taco Bell's profits will triple in days.

Legalize it!

Huh?!!?!?!

What the fuck is wrong with you people. There have been countless studies on weed abuse and how it rots your fucking brain and pushes you to a life of crime.

You damn liberals and your pothead ways. You damn conservatives and your dont care about anyone attitude.

WEED IS NOT COOL! People only want to smoke because of the way the media portrays potheads. They think its cool.but its not. i know

I'm in agreement with Jevan. But the problem is, people that are for legalizing pot are most likely far outnumbered by those that don't. I can't imagine any politician saying "I'll legalize pot" and then being elected to office.

Maybe California.

If it were legal I would smoke less. Does that sound crazy???
Let me explain..if I could go to the liquor store and buy a joint whenever I wanted I wouldn't buy an oz at a time. The more you have the more you smoke. I would have less around knowing I could get it anytime I wanted. No, really :)

Pot is essentially harmless. It just leads to junk food. Legalize it, tax the bejesus out of it, and relax. People that want it are getting it anyway...why not make it profitable for the country instead of the drug dealer?

Great thing is, this can be just like alcohol (except, you know, you can die from drinking too much alocohol at once...can't from pot). Have different varieties at different prices...imagine walking into a 7-11...

"Yes, can I get a pack of Doobie Lights?"

GENIUS!

I have been high for 20 years straight, and Im successful, have a phat home, and a squeaky clean record. So it actually CAN be done.
Im not saying I dont jack old people for ca$h though, becuase I do that all the time when Im high. Its how I make my living. Its kinda nice to get up, get high and rob people. Never been caught.

"can I get some marajuana, please?"

"sure thing, bub. You want joint, baggie, or bulk?"

as long as the government doenst run the program, Im fine with it.
If you legalize it and tax it, that would promote competition, driving quality up and revenue along with it.
And I dont think you liberal types would have to worry about a huge "weed lobby" monies offsetting the balance.. they wouldnt even show up..

We should legalize it and tax the hell out of it. And if we want to make any one feel like a loser, we could force them to hang out with Michael.

For those keeping score, this is another flip-flop issue for Obama.
Before he was running for POTUS he was for legalization. Now he's against it. Guess how many lib news sources are calling him on it? That right, zero.

So DARE, I suppose you also favor reinstating prohibition, yes? We'd better outlaw cigarettes, too. After all, more people are killed by drunk drivers and lung cancer than by gun toting pot smokers "pushed into a life of crime".

If not, what's the difference between booze and tobacco, both of which are highly addictive and will destroy your body if you have no self control, and weed? We're talking about three substances, all of which alter your state of conciousness. The major difference is, alcohol and tobacco have billion-dollar lobbies, and pot doesn't.The advocates are too busy eating mallomars and watching reruns of the Superfriends.

Kidding, pot smokers! :)

Pot is actually and factually not harmful. Do some of your own research on it. Not just reading research conducted by the government.

Go watch Super High Me and The Union those two movies will change your views on it. But most people don't wanna hear the truth so.......

Hey, "Obama Flipper" did you read MattL's post? Just because the majority of folks on this site realize that pot should be legalized doesn't mean that it is politically smart to do so.

Maybe it's because I don't smoke pot, but the fact that Obama "flip-flopped" on an issue that, if you polled it, would get the attention of 2% of the populace, doesn't make that much difference to me. The flip-flop that DOES, of course, would be that pesky economy thing.

How many times did your boy McCain change his stance on the economy in ONE WEEK?

Maybe put it on the ballot and let the people decide. Democracy..what a novel idea!

And for the record, I'm all for it.
